The World Expo is a large-scale, global, non-commercial Expo. The hosting of the World Expo must be applied for by a country and approved by the international World Expo committee. Expo aims to promote the exchange of ideas and development of the world economy, culture, science and technology, to allow exhibitors to publicise and display their achievements and improve international relationships. Accordingly, the World Expo with its 150-year history is regarded as the Olympic Games of the economy, science and technology.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a great event to explore the full potential of urban life in the 21st century and a significant period in urban evolution. Fifty-five percent of the world population is expected to live in cities by the year 2010. The prospect of future urban life, a subject of global interest, concerns all nations, developed or less developed, and their people. Being the first World Exposition on the theme of city, Exposition 2010 will attract governments and people from across the world, focusing on the theme "Better City, Better Life." For its 184 days, participants will display urban civilisation to the full extent, exchange their experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced notions on cities and explore new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. They will learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation and interaction. Innovation is the soul, while cultural interaction is an important mission of the World Expositions. In the new era, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will contribute to human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation, cultural diversity and win-win cooperation for a better future, thus composing a melody with the key notes of highlighting innovation and interaction in the new century.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will also be a grand international gathering. On the one hand, we shall endeavour to attract about 200 nations and international organisations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of the World Expositions. On the other hand, we will put Expo 2010 Shanghai China in a global perspective and do our best to encourage the participation and gain the understanding and support of various countries and peoples, in order to turn Expo 2010 Shanghai China into a happy reunion of people from all over the world.

In addition, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will offer a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Before the conclusion of the Exposition, a "Shanghai Declaration" will be issued. This declaration, hopefully a milestone in the history of the World Expositions, will epitomise the insights to be offered by the participants and embody people`s ideas for future cooperation and development and extensive common aspirations, thereby leaving a rich spiritual legacy of urban development to people throughout the world.

We invite you to the twelfth edition of the EKO-LAS Fair of Forestry, Wood Industry and Environmental Protection which will take place between 9 and 11 September 2010. Following the suggestion of main exhibitors, in particular the manufacturers and suppliers of forestry machines, and taking advantage of the suggestions of the General Directorate of the State Forests, we have chosen the Świebodzin Forest District for the place to organize the fair. Join the circle of our exhibitors and take part in the greatest event for the forestry and wood industry in Poland and Eastern Europe!

The Eko Las Fair is organized on a two-year cycle. Its latest edition in 2008 has gathered 120 exhibitors from Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Germany and Sweden. The fair was visited by 4500 people - the state forests personnel, forest services entrepreneurs, private forest owners, administrators of green areas, self-government officials and scientific research workers.

The EKO LAS Fair is the only so great event for the forestry sector in Poland. Since many years it constitutes the opportunity for presentation of current trends, technologies and novelties manufactured in the most important sectors connected with the wood market and forest management. Brownfields 2010 follows the success of the first four conferences in this series held in Cádiz (2002), Siena (2004), Tallinn (2006) and Cephalonia (2008).

The meeting provides an international forum to discuss the problems facing the public and private sectors, the engineering and scientific communities in terms of the land available for development purposes.

The demand for development land has led to the reuse of properties that have been abandoned for a variety of reasons. Many of them are brownfield sites which have deteriorated in different ways, including by contamination. These sites are usually a burden in terms of economic losses and contribute to the deterioration of the quality of life of entire neighbourhoods. They create enormous social problems in addition to severe land, soil and habitat degradation. The rehabilitation and redevelopment of brownfields and derelict land in general is one of the first priorities of environmental and spatial planning. The main objective for these sites is to find appropriate new uses and activities, taking into account their economic and social acceptability.

Rehabilitation of brownfields, particularly those which are contaminated, can be an expensive undertaking and requires not only technical solutions but the involvement of financial, regulatory and community stakeholders. Fundamental to this process is the analysis of the risks involved and the development of appropriate strategies. These need to be weighted against the economic and social benefits of brownfield development, to assess the general viability of the redevelopment. In most cases the demand for development land drives the process forward, while sometimes the rehabilitation is grounded on the wish to restore the landscape and the ecology of a region.

Brownfield development is in many cases essential to attract new business to the locality and for the creation of healthy communities. Therefore, there is a great need for deeper research and study of all aspects of the problem – technical, institutional, financial, social – and an exchange of ideas, know-how and experience among experts and scientists.

The new climate future
Claudia Kemfert, one of Europe‘s leading energy experts has a very clear message: "Innovation instead of depression". Previously, global and national strategies and measures had been the principal topics of discussion, but now, we need to tap available sources of detailed regional knowledge on upcoming changes in order to recognize the options and take action. Learning about the new financial aid schemes and financing models
The trend of diminishing government funds has been around for some time now. With the financial crisis, it has become even worse. The framework conditions for development initiatives will change tremendously in the coming years. What are the options for redefi ning EU structural policy after 2013? Which financing models can secure regional projects and business? What experiences have been made and what are the concepts available for actively taking advantage of citizens‘ capital for urban and regional development?

The increasing urbanization of many parts of the world coupled with other global issues such as environmental pollution, energy consumption, and resources shortage are resulting in major urban crises in many parts of the world. In an effort to explore and map the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Al-Fateh University and the Center for the Study of Architecture in the Arab Region (CSAAR) have joined together to organize an international conference on sustainable architecture and urban development.

The conference aims to address the various aspects of urban development in accordance with the principles of sustainability. The conference will address issues such as ecological and social sustainability, transit-oriented development, neotraditional design, eco-friendly development, economic and environmental sustainability, environmentalism, regionalism and architectural design. In addition, the conference will explore how neighborhood design can further a sustainable region and how local culture and history can interact with new urbanism concepts to create a new mix of urban development options. Of particular interest for the conference is sustainability in the Arab cities. These cities undergo one of the fastest rates of developments in the world. This rapid, often erratic, growth has not occurred without unwanted consequences in the built environment.

The theme of the conference is "Sustainable Architecture and Urban Development". It aims to provide a forum to examine and discuss solution-oriented methods for implementing sustainable development and urbanism, and to stimulate more ideas and useful insights regarding architecture and urban development within the context of sustainability. The conference welcomes papers that address issues related to sustainability in urban development and planning in the Middle East and elsewhere. In the interest of tackling these issues from multiple perspectives, we invite a wide array of research approaches, ranging from critical-theoretical interrogations to experimental-empirical studies that would encompass not only the spatial and physical aspects of the built environment, but also the social, economic, legislative, and ecological contexts and consequences.

FIG 2010 will be the largest surveying Congress in Australia and the Pacific region in 2010 and will therefore be a major attraction for Australian and regional visitors as well. We have made special efforts to get surveyors from New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific islands to attend. FIG 2010 will include one of the biggest trade shows in FIG history. We look forward to good attendances at the professional program, the exhibition and customised technical tours and workshops.

The Congress program will showcase the work of FIG (The International Federation of Surveyors) and its Commissions, Task Forces and Permanent Institutions. The program will be underpinned by invited presentations in four plenary sessions covering major challenges for Society and the Profession in the 21st Century. There will also be as many as 80 technical and poster sessions along with workshops and precongress seminars. Delegates will also be offered a range of very interesting technical tours aimed at highlighting the role of our profession in Australia and set across the broad context of FIG’s Commissions.

A two day workshop in association with the FIG Permanent Institution on the History of Surveying and Measurement will be attached to the Congress. The workshop will examine the development of the surveying profession in Australia and will be held in the Old Government House in Parramatta, which is the oldest existing public building in Australia. The workshop will include a focus on the first Surveyors General of the Australian States and Territories, with an interesting twist being that the presentations will be made by the current Surveyors General of those States and Territories.

As part of FIG’s commitment to develop new partnerships with its governmental Affiliate Members, the Sydney Congress will include a special Forum for the Chief Executive Officers of National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies. The forum will offer the opportunity for busy Chief Executive Officers to network with likeminded colleagues from around the world. As well as a forum for discussing the latest trends
in our industry, it will also enable the Chief Executive Officers to discuss organisational and policy issues associated with the evolving role of Government agencies in the 21 Century. This Forum is a special event for CEO’s to attend in conjunction with the Congress.

The year 2010 is 10 years after the coming into force of ILO Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL), one of the most widely-ratified international labour conventions, and it is 6 years ahead of the global target of eliminating these worst forms. While the global movement has achieved much progress in reducing the incidence of child labour, efforts must be stepped up if we are to deliver the commitment of a world free of the worst forms of child labour by 2016. In order to meet that challenge, the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, in cooperation with the ILO, is organizing a global conference on child labour to be held in The Hague (the Netherlands) on 10 and 11 May 2010.

The conference objectives are:

to deliver the commitment to take immediate and effective measures to end the worst forms of child labour as a matter of urgency;
to agree on significantly intensified efforts to reach the 2016 goal laid down in the Global Action Plan; and
to rapidly achieve universal ratification of ILO Conventions Nos. 138 and 182.

The event will feature the launching of the ILO Global Report on child labour. The report presents new global statistics and an analysis of child labour trends, helping us to evaluate progress to date, pointing out areas in which we have succeeded and signaling areas where more work is especially needed.

The conference will provide opportunities for countries, workers and employers organizations, international organizations, NGOs and other relevant parties to showcase their good practices and lessons learnt in the fight against the worst forms of child labour. Five thematic sessions - political awareness , financing needs , policy integration , tripartite action and focus on Africa - will offer even more occasions for all participants to discuss the challenges and opportunities at hand and to learn from each other’s experience.

Child labour is not a phenomenon that can be dealt with in isolation; it is both a cause and consequence of poverty and low levels of social welfare. This conference aims to mainstream the issue of child labour into the development debate, engaging a wide array of prominent global actors involved in the broader development field. Also, an interagency report by the ILO, UNICEF and the World Bank will be launched. The report will focus on child labour and development. Based on empirical research, the report will discuss the impact of child labour from a national development perspective, and the policy and programmatic priorities for addressing it in the years up to 2016. Particular attention will be paid to the situation of sub-Saharan Africa. The global economic crisis threatens progress made on the elimination of child labour. The impact of the crisis on child labour, and the opportunities that the recovery process may provide will also be discussed at the conference.

In cooperation with the ILO we have made a selection of participants to invite, representing different groups (workers and employers organizations, governments, NGOs, international and regional organizations and other parties), aiming at a fair regional distribution of participants. Not knowing who will accept the invitation at this time, it is not possible for non-invitees to register at this moment.

Nowadays, sustainable development was brought much forward than the concept expressed in the book “Our Common Future”, commonly known as “The Brundtland Report”. The role of culture and social aspects enlarged the initial statement where environment and economics took the main role, guiding the earliest research on sustainable development.
The environmentalist vision of the world as a whole ecological system, and the world economical trades and product and service flows, enhanced the idea of a globalized world, where different geographic dimensions of actions, both local and global, emerged as the main relationships between producers, consumers, and cultural specificities of peoples, philosophies and religions.

In such a global context, heritage becomes one of the key aspects for the enlargement of sustainable development concepts. Heritage is often seen through its cultural definition. However, sustainable development brings heritage concepts to another dimension, as it establishes profound relationships with economics, environment, and social aspects.
Nowadays, heritage preservation and safeguarding is facing new and complex problems. Degradation of Heritage sites is not any more just a result of materials aging or environmental actions. Factors such as global and local pollution, climate change, poverty, religion, tourism, commerce, ideologies, war, are now in the cutting edge for the emerging of new approaches, concerns and visions about heritage.

Thus, “Heritage 2010 – Heritage and Sustainable Development” is proposed to be a global view on how heritage is being contextualized in relation with the four dimensions of sustainable development. What is being done in terms of research, future directions, methodologies, working tools and other significant aspects of both theoretical and field approaches will be the aims of this International Conference.

Furthermore, heritage governance, and education are brought into discussion as the key factors for enlightenment of future global strategies for heritage preservation and safeguarding.

Sustainable Tourism 2010 will adopt a multi disciplinary approach and specifically aim to foster greater understanding and collaboration between scientists and social science experts, practitioners and policy makers. It will take a broad view of this sophisticated and complex industry, and will examine the practice of sustainable tourism from global travel trends through to destination and site management.
