The Second AACR Dead Sea International Conference on Advances in Cancer Research: From the Laboratory to the Clinic
will return to Jordan on March 7-10, 2010, under the Patronage of His
Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. This innovative conference
will provide an overview of the most cutting-edge cancer research in a
variety of fields, including the tumor microenvironment, microRNAs,
signal transduction, and novel therapeutic development. In-depth
Workshop Sessions will discuss the nuances and applications of various
new technologies, while Educational Sessions will delve into grant
writing and funding sources, clinical trial design, and scientific
writing and the publication process.
In order to make any advances in translational cancer medicine,
there must be open lines of communication between researchers and
clinicians. Therefore, this conference will appeal to a broad spectrum
of cancer researchers and we encourage early-career scientists,
especially, to attend. Oral presentations from proffered abstracts will
be featured in several sessions and poster sessions will be held to
allow investigators to present and discuss their latest research in an
informal setting. In addition, social events and career development
sessions are being planned to encourage interaction among attendees
themselves and with the conference speakers.
Through this important international conference, we hope that there
will be an interdisciplinary exchange of information as well as the
blossoming of new collaborations which are both essential for progress
against cancer to be made. We hope you will join us at the Dead Sea in
Jordan for this exciting program.

This is a new great opportunity to welcome our friends from the
Radiation Oncology Group of EORTC. Ten years ago, in spring of 2000,
just after the change of the millennium, I had the pleasure of hosting
you in my city. Now, I am keen to repeat this terrific experience.
Today, economics is not in its best moments and funding is scarce for
all, mainly for some medical specialties. This is especially harder for
Radiation Oncology, as we have often faced such difficulties, and for
many years, we have been working to demonstrate we are a key for cancer
treatment. Despite this, we are preparing an excellent occasion to meet
with all our ROG fellow members, as well as others that would like join
us.
ROG is, arguably,
the most active group in the history of EORTC, if based not just on
scientific production but also in the personal sphere. Becoming a
member of the ROG gave me the opportunity to learn a lot, including
being active, in many clinical trials and the opportunity to share nice
papers! Thanks to you all, one feels happy and at home with the ROG.

Otto Warburg initially drew attention
to the distinct metabolic state of tumors compared to normal tissues
over 75 years ago, where tumor cells commonly favor glycolysis over
oxidative phosphorylation even in the presence of oxygen (Warburg
effect or aerobic glycolysis). Insight into the role and mechanism of
this metabolic switch in tumorigenesis, and the utility of and means to
therapeutically exploit altered metabolism in cancer was not clear,
other than for utilization for FDG-PET imaging. Recently the metabolic
requirements of tumor cells and the links to common pathway alterations
in human cancers have been gradually emerging. It is now apparent that
metabolic demand in tumor cells is high due to deregulation of cell
growth, and that this constitutive activation of growth signaling
pathways can disconnect cellular metabolism from nutrient and growth
factor availability. Subversion of cellular metabolism for biosynthetic
purposes is required to sustain deregulated tumor cell growth but can
also restrict energy production that can limit tumor cell adaptation to
metabolic stress. Hypoxic and acidic conditions in the tumor
microenvironment are byproducts of these events and are common features
of the tumor microenvironment that can activate stress responses,
influence tumor growth, and impair treatment. Many of the oncogenic
pathways altered in tumor cells modulate cell metabolism while enabling
growth in these adverse conditions. Adaptation of tumor cells to stress
through activation of the catabolic pathway of autophagy and its role
in damage mitigation and promoting tumor cell survival to metabolic
stress is also now emerging. The vision for this meeting is to bring
together leaders in the fields of cancer, signaling and metabolism to
discuss emerging discoveries and their application to improving cancer
therapy.

Homeostatic and pathological cell
death can occur through a multiplicity of different mechanisms
including apoptosis, autophagy, necrosis and others. The morphological
and functional definitions of distinct cell death modalities are
emerging, and the relationships between different lethal pathways are
being determined. However, the exact nature of the molecular switches
that determine which subroutines cells disintegrate are elusive.
Moreover, the relative contributions of different cell death modalities
to the avoidance of cancer or degenerative diseases remain to be
defined. In cancer, in particular, where defects in cell death are
prevalent and the survival of undead cells enables progression and
treatment resistance, restoration of cell death pathways is an
important and achievable therapeutic goal. Finally, distinct cell death
modalities may remain immunologically silent or trigger an immune
response, through mechanisms that are still elusive. The 2010 Keystone
Symposia meeting on Cell Death will address the normal regulation and
pathogenic dysfunction of distinct cell death modalities, present new
strategies for therapeutic cancer cell induction and address the
immunogenicity of distinct cell death types.

Psychiatry Review Course Exclusive*: What better way to
spend a week in March than enjoying a Disney CME cruise? A cruise aboard
a Disney ship is a unique experience unlike any other cruise. Naturally,
Disney is great for children and families, but you might be surprised
to learn that a Disney cruise rivals or surpasses the elegance of the
more `traditional` top-rated cruiselines. Adults and couples, and not
only children, routinely rave about their Disney cruise experience!
The
nautically themed Disney Magic cruiseship evokes the era of grand cruiseliners,
and the experience on board is both fun and elegant. A great deal of
attention has been paid by Disney towards ensuring that all guests can
enjoy the experience they seek. Children can play in their own space
under the supervision of trained counsellors, and have access to unmatched
Disney childrens` programmes; families can spend time together in family
areas; and adults can spend time alone in adult designated areas. The
activities and spaces aboard the ship are designed to facilitate all
these needs, with areas dedicated not only for children, but also adult-only
spaces, including entertainment venues and pools.
There will be approximately
14.5 hours of CME group sessions during
this conference, featuring a mixture of general and specialized topics
in psychiatry, plus an optional additional 8 hours
in our CME To Go program.

The most exciting recent advances in
viral immunity include the increased understanding of the role of
innate immune mechanisms, interaction between innate and adaptive
immunity, pathogen manipulation of host responses, and activation of
immune responses and generation of immune memory. Despite these
advances, basic mechanisms of anti-viral immunity are poorly
characterized particularly for chronic infections. Efforts are also
required to exploit recent research advances to improve vaccine design
and therapeutic intervention. This meeting will include both innate and
adaptive immunity and juxtapose animal models with human studies as it
attempts to foster collaborative efforts between attending viral
immunologists and the HIV vaccine researchers in the joint meeting.
Expert talks in plenary sessions will encompass the latest in critical
areas of viral immunity. Workshops and additional presentations will
cover provocative and cutting-edge results from attendees. The meeting
objective is to accelerate progress in understanding and manipulating
anti-viral immunity to improve human health.
Nuclear receptors represent a family
of ligand-regulated transcription factors that play central roles in
development, physiology, and metabolism. Upon binding small lipophilic
hormones and metabolites, such as steroids, fatty acids, and bile
acids, nuclear receptors switch their regulatory status, reprogramming
gene expression in target tissues. Current research is aimed at
defining roles for these receptors in normal development and metabolism
as well as better understanding how nuclear receptor dysfunction
contributes to diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and
neuronal disorders. Nuclear receptors are also a major target for drug
development, with many compounds on the market and several in ongoing
human trials. This meeting will highlight recent breakthroughs in
nuclear receptor research, promote interactions between scientists from
industry and academia, and provide opportunities for senior scientists
to interact with younger researchers and trainees.
Traditionally, the Keystone Joint HIV
Symposia have integrated vaccines and pathogenesis to comprehensively
cover the field—from HIV’s fundamental biology to its interaction with
the human immune system and how to design a vaccine—and these Joint
Symposia have been convened every year. In addition to this Keystone
Joint Symposium, there are a couple of other well-established HIV
vaccine meetings in the year (CROI and the AIDS Vaccine Conference)
that follow a similar format and also often feature a similar line-up
of speakers. Since an HIV vaccine is proving to be a particularly
recalcitrant problem, a novel approach that facilitates a wider
cross-fertilization of ideas would be very valuable and would be
welcomed by the broader HIV vaccine research community. To that end,
the major development proposed for the 2010 Keystone HIV Vaccine
Symposium is to foster innovative ideas and new collaborations with
immunology and vaccinology as it pertains to other viral diseases.
Specifically, we propose that a new Joint Symposium of HIV Vaccines in
conjunction with Viral Immunity be convened. This Joint Symposium would
retain the valuable format that includes joint and separate sessions
covering general and specific principles.
Nuclear receptors (NRs) comprise a
large family of ligand-regulated transcription factors that play
critical roles in physiology and disease. Much of the focus has been on
the nuclear actions of NRs, including interactions with coregulators,
modulation of chromatin structure, and regulation of gene expression.
Recent studies, however, have also suggested a role for membrane- or
cytoplasmic-initiated actions of NRs and crosstalk with other cellular
signaling pathways. Current studies are aimed at understanding how the
ligand-dependent molecular actions of NRs, including their subcellular
localization, binding across the genome, and interaction with the
proteome, connect to their roles in physiological and
pathophysiological processes, including hormone-regulated cancers. In
addition, NRs are being explored as targets for drug development, with
many compounds on the market or in ongoing clinical trials. This
meeting will highlight recent breakthroughs in NR research, promote
interactions between scientists from industry and academia, and provide
opportunities for senior scientists to interact with younger
researchers and trainees.

Pervasive healthcare is an emerging research discipline, focusing on the development and application of pervasive and ubiquitous computing technology for healthcare and wellness. Pervasive healthcare seeks to respond to a variety of pressures on healthcare systems, including the increased incidence of life-style related and chronic diseases, emerging consumerism in healthcare, need for empowering patients and relatives for self-care and management of their health, and need to provide seamless access for health care services, independent of time and place.
Pervasive healthcare may be defined from two perspectives. First, it is the development and application of pervasive computing (or ubiquitous computing, ambient intelligence) technologies for healthcare, health and wellness management. Second, it seeks to make healthcare available to anyone, anytime, and anywhere by removing locational, time and other restraints while increasing both the coverage and quality of healthcare.
The Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather together technology experts, practitioners, industry and national authorities contributing towards the development and application of human-centered pervasive and ubiquitous computing technology for healthcare and wellness.
