Dear members of the GTH and NVTH, dear colleagues, physicians, investigators and students in the field of haemostaseology,
With great pleasure we, on behalf of the organising committee and our societies, invite you to attend the 54th Congress of the „Gesellschaft für Thrombose- und Hämostaseforschung“ (GTH) which is also a meeting of “Nederlandse Vereniging voor Trombose en Hemostase”
(NVTH). For the first time the "GTH 2010" is the joint meeting of these
two sister societies. Our joint meeting scheduled for February 24 -27,
2010, will take place in the Franconian capital of Nürnberg which is
near to the university town of Würzburg. Nearly 160 years ago, in
1849/1850, five highly talented professors of Würzburg University
founded the “Societas Physico-Medica” which initiated an enduring
spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration between basic and clinical
scientists. One member of this academic society, Röntgen, later
discovered the X-rays. Another founding member (see below), Rudolf
Virchow, not only established the concept of molecular and cellular
pathology but was one of the founding fathers of the field thrombosis
and hemostasis. Other members of this academic society in Würzburg
included a biochemist, a pharmacologist, a clinical chemist and a
clinician (see below). Such interdisciplinary collaboration is also the
true hallmark of the field of thrombosis and hemostasis which nowadays
covers many fields of basic and clinical sciences. In the tradition of
this interdisciplinary collaboration, and in the tradition of former
GTH and NVTH meetings, we now plan the first joint meeting of the GTH
and NVTH for 2010. We truly hope that our meeting and its program with
plenary lectures, educational sessions, scientific symposia, free
communications and posters will attract many of our GTH / NVTH members
but also scientists, clinicians and students from other neighbouring
European countries. Although facilities in Würzburg are unfortunately
too small to accommodate such a prominent meeting, we are very pleased
to organize this congress in Nürnberg which offers a wide spectrum of
historical, modern and cosmopolitan sights and opportunities. We are
also optimistic that Virchow’s spirit of interdisciplinary interaction
can be transfered from the lower Franconian town Würzburg to the
Franconian-Bavarian metropolis Nürnberg. With our congress motto “Basic
and clinical research for our patients of all ages and in all
situations” and our envisioned program, we hope to stimulate both
academic and social interactions.
This educational activity is specifically designed for
hematologists, medical oncologists, transplant oncologists, oncology
fellows, oncology nurses, internists, and other physicians,
physicians-in-training, and healthcare professionals involved in and/or
interested in lymphoma, myeloma, related plasma cell disorders, and in
the special session of 2010, acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Discuss
the role of the microenvironment in the development and disease
progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and follicular lymphoma
Evaluate how the disease risk and age of a patient determines optimal management and the course of therapy for lymphoma
Describe
the biology, management, and current treatment options of myeloma and
lymphoma for front-line, salvage, and maintenance therapy, as well as
therapeutic strategies to overcome relapsed/refractory disease
Evaluate
the feasibility of chemotherapy, radioimmunotherapy, targeted therapy,
and transplantation as treatment options for various stages of indolent
lymphoma
Debate whether autologous or allogeneic stem cell transplantation is appropriate for management of mantle cell lymphoma
Employ current and novel strategies to improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes in aggressive non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas

in the same manner
Positively
impact patient outcomes by assimilating diagnostic, prognostic, and
molecular approaches toward optimal stratification for current and
novel treatment options in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Since 1994 PPTA’s Congresses have provided valuable insights into the issues affecting the plasma protein industry.
IPPC has been the primary international congress for all
stakeholders of plasma protein therapies. Building on the experience
and success of the past but with a clear eye to the future, the IPPC
2010 offers delegates a unique, two-day programme with speakers of the
highest calibre, representing institutions and organizations that
provide leadership and direction in several important areas.
Sessions will feature topics such as clinical developments, patient
access, self-sufficiency, regulatory considerations, plasma collection,
health policy and much more. There will be ample time for discussion
and questions after the presentations and during the cocktail buffet
reception on 16 March which will complement the full and diverse
programme.
The interests of patients and physicians are everyone’s number one
priority, be they politicians, regulators, scientists, healthcare
funding organizations and for those working in the industry. Our
intention is to create a congress for all.
This educational activity is primarily targeted
to academic and community hematologists and oncologists, and
secondarily to oncology nurses and other health care professionals
interested in the management of patients with hematologic malignancies.
Objectives
After successful completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
Identify the most effective therapeuticstrategies and novel combinations for acute leukemias, especially for the care of
elderly patients
Correctly utilize imaging techniques to ensure successful management and validate response criteria for patients with
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Review traditional treatment strategies for lymphoma and decide whether emerging, updated therapies could potentially
optimize patient outcomes
Determine how the emergence of novel agents in multiple myeloma could affect the use of markers for patient risk
stratification and approaches to overcome treatment resistance
Evaluate the optimal frontline approach to multiple myeloma treatment, including the most favorable number of agents,
treatment sequencing, inclusion of novel agents, and the use of
bisphosphonates for symptom management
Determine how to effectively manage multiple myeloma patients with preexisting complications
The Platelets 2010 program will include sessions on:
• Platelet development • Platelet activation • Platelet signaling • Platelet adhesion • Platelet function testing • Genetic disorders, including functional genomics • Platelets in inflammation and atherosclerosis • Immune platelet disorders, including ITP, TTP, HIT • Platelet microparticles • Pharmacology I • Pharmacology II
Back for a second year, this meeting will offer important information on evolving therapies, as well as the latest treatment options and their clinical applications, from the 51st ASH Annual Meeting.
The 2010 program focuses on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of common malignant and benign hematologic disorders, including acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma, thrombotic disorders, myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative disorders, sickle cell anemia, transfusion medicine, hemolytic anemia and malaria, and health disparities and outcomes for patients with hematologic diseases.
The program format, including panel discussions and “Breakfast with the Experts,” will provide numerous opportunities for attendees to discuss real patient cases with leaders in the field, network with colleagues, and gain practice-changing insights.
Presentations will be delivered in English and simultaneously translated into both Portuguese and Spanish. Program materials will be available in English only. We hope you will join us at this exciting event.
