Nuclear receptors represent a family
of ligand-regulated transcription factors that play central roles in
development, physiology, and metabolism. Upon binding small lipophilic
hormones and metabolites, such as steroids, fatty acids, and bile
acids, nuclear receptors switch their regulatory status, reprogramming
gene expression in target tissues. Current research is aimed at
defining roles for these receptors in normal development and metabolism
as well as better understanding how nuclear receptor dysfunction
contributes to diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and
neuronal disorders. Nuclear receptors are also a major target for drug
development, with many compounds on the market and several in ongoing
human trials. This meeting will highlight recent breakthroughs in
nuclear receptor research, promote interactions between scientists from
industry and academia, and provide opportunities for senior scientists
to interact with younger researchers and trainees.

In 2010 ESCMID will celebrate once again the International Day for Fighting Infection by organizing a one-day symposium on milestones in the history of infections. This 3rd edition will be held once again on St. George`s Day and will trace the evolution over the centuries of infection control in hospitals and of ad-hoc hospitals for infectious patients.
This event is organized in cooperation with the International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC) and the International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID), and supported by The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
The European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases Annual Meetings are held annually guaranteeing attendees the most up to date information on epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and clinical presentation of important paediatric diseases. ESPID 2010, co-organized by the ESPID Society and the ESPID Foundation, features international experts, a high-quality scientific program, and the beautiful city of Nice as its 28th meeting location
This exciting meeting will cover a broad array of cutting edge topics in infectious diseases (not only tropical medicine!). The invited international speakers will present key insights into malaria, vaccinology, and microbial genomics. Other sessions will cover topics including viral hepatitis, mycobacterial disease, infections in intensive care, clinical trials in infectious diseases and much more.
The conference will provide a
unique opportunity to participate in hearing
or presenting the latest information in the
field of travel medicine. The target audience
includes travel medicine practitioners, primary care
physicians, infectious disease and tropical medicine
specialists, researchers, nurses,
pharmacists, and students involved in this
field. The conference will also meet the needs of the
travel media and industry including manufacturers of travel
health-related products, drugs and vaccines.
The programme will include all aspects of travel
medicine including the “basics“ such as
vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis and
travellers diarrhoea – but we will also try to substantiate
travel medicine advice on a sound scientific basis and on
good epidemiological data. In our opinion, travel medicine in
a globalised world also includes migration medicine,
occupational medicine and environmental
issues. Practitioners giving pre-travel
advice also see patients returning with unfamiliar
and tropical diseases – differential diagnosis in these
travellers will also be an important topic. A
special local conference theme will be
maritime medicine. Last but not least we think
that the conference is a forum to establish standards for
training and education in travel medicine.
