Maximizing drilling efficiency to reduce operational costs and optimize production
DrillTech 2010 – Premier Drilling Conference for the Middle East
The energy industry is constantly evolving to meet demanding production targets. The recent economic slowdown and subsequent “oil shock” has placed further pressure on the oil and gas industry to maximize production whilst reducing operational costs. It is therefore essential to maximize drilling efficiency in order to tap into the region’s vast oil and gas reserves. As access to reserves becomes more complex with gradual reservoir depletion, advanced drilling techniques are required to bolster production and exploit the energy resources available.
IQPC are pleased to announce the return of DrillTech 2010, an exclusive interactive forum for industry leaders to discuss the latest challenges, strategies and solutions associated with implementing the latest drilling technologies to various operating environments.

Creating a profitable smart metering business
The Nordic region is one of the early adopters of the smart metering business and therefore leading the way to what now appears inevitable throughout the EU and beyond. It is now expected that by 2014, near-full rollout of smart meters will have been achieved in Finland, Sweden and Norway and Denmark.
The 3rd edition of Smart Metering Scandinavia will take place in Denmark and is expected to attract over 250 delegates from Europe’s leading companies involved in the smart metering business.
The uptake of smart metering in Denmark is increasing and the Danish Government will follow its Nordic Neighbors and initiate legislation in 2010. However distribution companies are already implementing AMR projects driven by the administrative and operational advantages provided by AMR meters. Support for – and stimulation of – energy savings is also an important objective for these projects and Denmark’s exceptionally high level of wind generation make smart meter enabled demand response and customer feedback programmes of special interest. The deployment of electric vehicles is also an immediate concern, increasing the dynamic nature of Denmark’s electricity market.
During the 2-day conference insights will be given in the developments and challenges which a “mature” smart metering market is facing nowadays. High-level presentations will look at how to effectively and efficiently implement mass smart metering rollout, considering the business-case, regulatory challenges, cross-industry cooperation, data handling and the importance of value added services by using your smart metering in an advanced way!

Time to sit back and relax?
No! If you
don’t want to see those figures creep back up again you need to sit
down and take a long hard look at what the industry is doing right and
make sure it continues.
On the other hand, if you take another look at the figures above, there are two different messages you may not have seen:
Clearly there are still plenty of things going wrong, do you know exactly what all of them are? And could you honestly say that you have all the solutions?
Upstream Safety 2010 returns this year to help you
do all of the above. Whether your focus is on behavioural safety,
process safety or an amalgamation of the two, there will be a stream to
fit your needs. And what’s more, following the feedback of last year’s
attendees we will be capitalising on the interactive aspects of the

How to move smart grid implementation forward The age of large scale smart grid deployment is finally here after years of research, demonstrations and small island prototypes. Transformation of energy market have paved the way for smart grids as a highly responsive solution to changed power dynamics created by large scale wind farm projects both onshore and offshore, increased penetration of generation in low voltage networks supporting solar PV and micro-CHP and increased use of controllable devices on the customer side of the meter.
Smart grids delivers a key component in this revolutionary change. Greater intelligence, especially in low and medium voltage networks, controllability of both networks and customer demand, coupled with greater intermittency in generation are all driving the deployment of smart grids.
The 2nd annual Smart Grids Europe conference and exhibition will bring together 25+ of Europe’s industry professionals to deliver case studies on smart grid projects providing an answer to the complexity of distributed generation allowing utilities to balance generation and effectively manage power usage.

Kyrgyzstan possesses a significant potential of water, wind, solar and
biomass power. Power Kyrgyzstan is expected to focus on Alternative
Sources of Energy, which also includes wind power, hydropower, biomass,
and solar energy.
Currently, hydropower is the core development area in Kyrgyzstan’s
power industry. The new short-term power policy addresses further
electrification in production and social areas based on use of
renewable water power, which can solve many power supply problems by
turning some consumers to electrical power. With regard to water
resources, Kyrgyzstan holds the third place (45.6% of potential
reserves in the country’s total power balance) among the CIS countries,
yielding only to Russia and Tajikistan. Still, current use of water
power resources remains insignificant and makes up a mere 9.2% of the
potential. In this respect, the Government of Kyrgyzstan is about to
upgrade the existing hydroelectric power stations (GES) – Uchkurgan GES
and At-Bashi GES, and to carry out a number of projects on construction
of new GES – Kambaraty GES-1; Kambaraty GES-2; Verkhnenarynsk GES chain
which will also include Oruktam GES, Janykel GES, Naryn GES-1, and
Naryn GES-3.
In view of these facts, exhibitors will include companies
offering construction, installation, repair, and start-up operations in
hydraulic power industry; suppliers of equipment for hydroelectric
power stations, think tanks, design institutions, and educational
organisations working for hydraulic power industry, hydraulic
engineering and environment protection.

Introduction of smart grids is a great opportunity for the Polish energy sector - a huge project that will connect the energy sector with modern technologies. It is a milestone in empowering the consumers position on the electricity market and increasing energy efficiency. The Polish power sector cannot remain indifferent to the challenges of the ambitious nature of civilization, associated with the modernization of the electricity grid. We cannot afford failure in relation to other countries that have implemented the development of smart grids hoping to benefit from a combination of "traditional power" with new technologies - stresses
Mr. Mariusz Swora, President of URE.
The President of URE stressed that implementation of this ambitious project will change the situation on the energy market, enforce the position of consumers, giving them the necessary information, which will help them to manage its energy consumption and lower their energy bills. For the Energy Regulator the key issue is to define the state`s role in the implementation of smart metering.

It is widely recognised that the roll-out of smart metering in Great Britain will represent the largest and most complex change-over programme in the energy industry for decades. It will have a profound impact on the services that consumers receive from energy companies, as well as on vital ‘behind the scenes’ activities such as settlement and network management.
In October 2008 the Government announced its intention to mandate a roll out of electricity and gas smart meters to all homes in Great Britain with the aim of completing the roll out by the end 2020. The Government published a ‘Consultation on Smart Metering for Electricity and Gas on 11 May 2009. This Consultation was aimed at confirming the shape and high-level requirements for the domestic roll-out. It also set out proposals to mandate a smart/advanced meter roll out for small and medium non-domestic sites.
Decisions set out in the Government Response Document provide the platform to launch the major programme of implementation work that will be needed to ensure that the Government’s goal of a full roll-out of smart meters by the end of 2020 is successfully achieved. To realise all the benefits fully, the roll-out of smart meters will need to be effectively designed, planned and co-ordinated at every stage. A major programme of work therefore needs to be taken forward under an Implementation Programme before the mass roll out of smart meters begins.
Join over 300 senior level industry experts during Smart Metering UK & Ireland 2010 and discuss the way forward in Europe’s largest smart metering roll-out!

Currently, there is one viewpoint – nuclear power is the only source
able to increase its share in the world balance and thus meet the
growing needs of people in energy. According to some estimates, the
number of nuclear power reactors will treble by 2050.
Kazakhstan is not going to stand aback from this global trend. With its
significant reserves of natural uranium and production of components
for nuclear fuel, Kazakhstan can potentially become a key player in the
world nuclear market. Kazakhstan possesses the world’s second largest
reserves of natural uranium produced by use of the most effective
technique – the so called underground leaching.
The Government of Kazakhstan plans to set up a complete vertically
integrated nuclear power cycle. En route from a mine to the nuclear
power station, uranium has to undergo a long chain consisting of five
links: production, conversion, isotope separation, manufacture of fuel
pellets, and manufacture of fuel assemblies. To date, Kazakhstan has
two production processes: uranium production and manufacture of powders
and fuel pellets. All missing links of the nuclear power cycle are
being added – conversion and uranium enrichment, and manufacture of
fuel assemblies.
Kazakhstan has realistic plans to develop nuclear power. In concert
with the world’s leading companies in the nuclear industry, Kazakhstan
plans to have 16% of the world’s conversion capacities by 2020. With
regards to enrichment, Kazakhstan’s share may reach 7%. Kazakhstan’s
share in manufacture of fuel pellets will significantly increase up to
13%.
The plans for 2020 also include commissioning of at least one nuclear
power station in Kazakhstan, and preparations are already being carried
out.

More than 80% of our energy comes from the combustion of fossil fuels, which will still remain the dominant energy source for years to come. It is agreed that carbon dioxide (CO2) produced from fossil fuel combustion to be the most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas leading to global warming. This conference targets forward-thinking oil, gas, coal and power companies that position themselves now to face the challenge of CO2 reduction in the forthcoming low-carbon economy. This conference will focus on the challenge of developing technology to combat climate change. This must include sustainable energy production – through increased alternative energy sources, CO2 capture and utilization. It should also include sustainable energy consumption - via increased energy efficiency and process innovations in industry. The conference will identify technology pathways for identifying technologies which are practical and economic for reducing CO2 so that end-users have real choices to take actions in the market-place.

Globally, at least 130 gas fields are left stranded, waiting to be
monetized. This amounts to at least USD$ 273 billion of potential
revenue that is left out in the cold.
Today, we have already seen leaders like Shell, who have taken the
first step to leverage on FLNG to monetize their Prelude field in the
Browse Basin off Western Australia, and in Nigeria.
Santos has also joined the bandwagon with its joint venture deal
with GDF Suez to build an FLNG platform in the Bonaparte Basin capable

The energy sector in Central and South Eastern Europe is facing an important period of change and development. The current credit and economic crisis, the ensuing fall in energy demand, regulatory disruptions and the continuing drive toward common energy market combine into a cocktail of major uncertainties and challenges for power and gas traders in this region.
Power traders are grappling with declining allocations of cross border transmission capacity, while at the same time trying to understand how a change to flow based calculation and allocation may work out in future. National electricity markets continue to display markedly different structural characteristics at the wholesale level, in spite of regulators’ efforts to bring about harmonisation.
Meanwhile the next phase of European gas market liberalisation, bringing stricter unbundling rules, may mean restructuring of the regional gas industry will gather pace. Will the winter of 2009/2010 see a new Russia-Ukraine gas crisis erupt making energy security more important than ever?
The Energy Trading Central and South Eastern European conference (“ETCSEE”) on 9 and 10 June in Warsaw, Poland addresses these and other critical issues affecting traders in the region and the potential profitability of their businesses.

According to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), O&M
costs have dominated the economics of grid connected wind turbines in
recent years; however O&M has oftentimes been neglected. The rapid
development of this renewable energy industry means there has never
been a more important time to safeguard wind farm assets and build on
innovative O&M strategies in order to increase turbine reliability
and in turn profits. Tough decisions need to be made quickly in this proactive
industry to solve the challenges of offshore O&M, health and safety
hazards, obsolescence of components and implementing new technologies.
Don’t let the important questions go unanswered such as:
- Should we implement condition based monitoring and if so, which one?
- How do we improve our accessibility to offshore wind farms?
- How do operators and manufacturers maintain strong lasting relationships?
- What new technologies should we be put into operation to increase efficiency?
- What are the important health and safety guidelines?
- How do we optimise our O&M strategies with our current wind farm portfolio?

Energy is fundamental to the quality of life on the earth. It is a key ingredient in all sectors of modern economies. We are totally dependent on an abundant and uninterrupted supply of energy for living and working. Meeting the growing demand for energy sustainably is one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century. By 2050, the world’s population is set to increase from 6.6 billion currently to more than nine billion. Energy use during this period is set to double. Consumption of energy resources by humans adds substantially to CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change. Urgently arresting climate change is in the interests of all nations. Transition to a low carbon economy is therefore a global aim that envelops every single nation. That is why an international forum for the exchange of ideas and experience amongst experts from a broad range of disciplines on the technology, policy and economic frame work is essential. Such a forum will lead to better understanding of energy issues on local, regional and global scales. ICEST offers the opportunity for scientists, professionals, policymakers and other parties to review recent developments in this rapidly changing discipline. The aim is to create a global sustainable energy infrastructure.

Nuclear Power Asia 2010 opens its doors to the global nuclear energy companies to tap into the growing Asian nuclear reactor market worth tens of billions of dollars!
The need for power is on the rise. Local sources of power like hydropower and thermopower are limited and purchasing power from neighboring countries can’t help ensure power security. Therefore the push for nuclear energy is an increasingly popular solution to address the issues of energy security, supply and climate change in Asia. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand are implementing plans to turn to nuclear energy to curb their dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

Managing safer facilities under cost, human, process and environmental constraints
A
recent study indicates that about 85 percent of all workplace injuries
and fatalities can be avoided. Most accidents stem from human error or
inattention that can be prevented by making sure employees have been
properly trained for their jobs. Are you doing ALL you can to decrease the costs of workplace accidents?
Did you know
that plenty of injury and ill-health costs are not covered by insurance
such as lost time, sick pay, damage or loss of product, repairs to
plant and equipment, production delays, fines, loss of contracts?
An injury to a worker using an unguarded drill can cost USD 80,000 and that does not include any court costs. Are these figures you can afford to spend in the current cost conscious economy?

Few industries have escaped unscathed from the economic uncertainty
of recent times. Energy and continuous process industries in particular
have been severely affected by a decline in profits, caused not only by
the drop in the price of oil, but also by a reduction in consumption by
cost-conscious customers keen to reduce usage. The knock on effect of
lower profits has of course been budget cuts and thus projects of both
operational and strategic importance to the business have been
postponed or cancelled during the past year.
2010 will be a different matter altogether. No longer can vital
operational and maintenance work be postponed and, perhaps more
importantly, businesses are realising that without development and
innovation, investment in new technologies and techniques, they could
continue to wallow in the depths of recession while their braver
competitors gain advantage, emerge stronger and in a better position to
take advantage of when more prosperous times return.
IQPC has developed a comprehensive learning programme specifically
tailored to help plan and execute shutdown projects more effectively
within the constraints of economic and resource scarcity.
The operator case study-led programme delivers experience-based,
proven insights which will be of direct relevance to your 2010 planning
strategy. You will take away, practical lessons and ideas that you can
apply to your job the minute you return to the office. The operator-led
agenda will deliver current insights into:
- Developing shutdown and turnaround strategies to help maximise asset value
- Fostering
a continuous process improvement environment to enhance shutdown
management and embed a long-term shutdown culture in your organisation
- Improving integrity management across sites to save thousands on industrial insurance policies
- Identifying
new technologies and techniques that can improve efficiency in and
reduce the cost of performing vital TAR projects such as pressure
cleaning and jointing replacement
- Implementing techniques to boost and maintain productivity within the TAR environment
- Executing outages as safely as possible and in compliance within HSE guidelines and requirements

The objectives of the European Union regarding sustainable energy and
the reduction of greenhouse gas, fossil fuel price oscillations and,
especially, the role of agriculture in safeguarding the environment all
demand new impetus to implement the “Green Economy”. A possibility for
improving the income of agricultural companies, already faced by
increases in production costs and falling commodity prices.
Income
from sustainable energy in agriculture is much more than just a
challenge. It is an opportunity, that many companies in the primary
sector have already grasped. Mention need only be made of figures for
agro-energy in Italy and Europe, where production of sustainable energy
is now in excess of 3,000 billion kW/hours.
Multifunctionality in agriculture also passes through clean energy:
complementary income to primary production, closely linked with
agricultural activity, that also helps reduce energy bills for fossil
fuels, to the advantage of the environment and company financial
statements.
New forms of energy - as a source of income and the key for strategic
and effective interpretation of a new awareness combining environment,
business and development - are now brought together at VeronaFiere.
Bioenergy Expo is the exhibition of sustainable energy designed to
offer new income opportunities for agricultural entrepreneurs and
present information and opportunities to energy sector operators
concerning the generation of energy from agricultural sources.
The event is scheduled alongside Fieragricola - and the last edition event attracted an impressive 127,500 operators.

With current high oil prices and the forecast of Australia`s energy
consumption to increase by about 2% a year in the next 25 years, there
is the need of further developing alternative fuels and encourage the
production of liquid fuels from gas fields and coalfieds.
This
has led to a renew interest in coal as an alternative feedstock for the
production of transport fuels and chemicals. By using coal conversion
technologies, such as coal-to-liquids, the vast coal resources in
Australia could become an important alternative to crude oil.
In
April 2009 the Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson AM
MP, has launched the world`s first coal-to-liquids demonstration plant
to use Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) technology.
Australia is coal and gas rich, with hundreds of years of reserves.
Technologies that convert coal and gas to ultra-clean diesel and jet
fuel have the potential to replace Australia`s declining oil reserves
and make us self-sufficient in liquid transport fuels.
The
Australian Government is encouraging the development of coal-to-liquids
in Australia through its election commitment to use the $500 million National Low Emissions Coal Fund to support projects generating minimal carbon emissions which utilise Australia’s extensive coal resources.
The
5th annual Coal to Liquids and Gas to Liquids Conference will explore
the prospects for UCG, coal liquefaction, commercial advantages,
environmental issues and a review of some of the projects in Australia
and overseas. An update on GTL will also be included.

Producing oil remote from infrastructure is not too much of an issue – you stick it in a tanker, it is fairly stable and you can easily ship it to a refinery or market. Gas is more complicated – it is extremely unstable in its natural state and needs extensive processing to make it safe for transportation. These processes are not easy to do on a floating platform the middle of the ocean. But, in order to get at the oil you first have to do something with the gas. Associated Gas 2010 is aimed at oil field developers who have to find a way to deal with the gas, avoiding costly delays.
With increasing international pressure (and, in many places, legislation) to reduce flaring and venting gas the oil producers must find some other way to deal with the associated gas, or they will no longer be able to exploit remote oil fields. Associated Gas 2010 will look at ways in which the gas can be utilised and sent to a market where some, if not all, of the cost can be recuperated.
Key topics to be addressed:
- Treating natural gas as a valuable resource
- Balancing the utilisation of flared gas with the safety purposes of flaring
- Development of GGFR solutions in a wider perspective
- Gas utilisation and financing - the operator view
- CDM opportunities and challenges
- Converting flares to fuel

The energy sector in Ontario is undergoing tremendous change with the passing of the Green Energy and Green Economy Act (GEGEA) and, with it, come significant environmental and socio-economic opportunities, and challenges.
To meet infrastructure demands as we adapt to a more sustainable, green energy economy, the Ontario Government has earmarked a number of long term transmission projects in areas with significant potential for renewable power generation. In turn, local distribution companies (LDCs) are now obligated to connect distributed and renewable generation projects to the distribution grid, including two-way distribution for those customers who want to install solar panels on their roof or connect larger solar, wind and biofuel projects.
The Ontario Power Authority has also come out with one of the most aggressive new Feed-In Tariff programs for renewable energy in North America which will make investments in renewable energy and community power projects competitive with conventional long term investments. Accordingly, the Ontario Energy Board’s mandate continues to grow to ensure the appropriate regulations are in place.
This Insight Information conference will offer a focused, practical and informative two-day program of thought-provoking panels and presentations, delivered by leading experts and decision makers in the field. Hear about the latest developments underway to transform Ontario’s economy into a green economy and the economic growth and employment prospects that go hand in hand with these developments. For added value, you may wish to take advantage of the in-depth, interactive workshops that will help you successfully navigate new funding programs being offered by the Ontario Power Authority.
We look forward to seeing you March 1-2, 2010!

In a dynamic world it is important to stay ahead of developments in technology, regulation and practice. This is particularly true in the field of hydrocarbon flow measurement, where the measurements made have a high economic impact.
Appropriate flow measurement is of great importance in the production of oil and gas, allowing improvements in recoveries to be made and ensuring the accuracy of custody transfer. For everyone involved in hydrocarbon flow measurement, it is important to share knowledge and to maximise the benefits that accurate measurement can bring.
The South East Asia Hydrocarbon Flow Measurement Workshop was established by TUV NEL in 2001 to provide a forum for the exchange of flow measurement experience in the region. The workshop has brought together operators, regulators, equipment suppliers, engineering contractors, service companies and researchers to share information and experience. It is the only major forum to address the changes in flow measurement practice and technology that affect this region.
