Coastal Engineering and Management AsiaTwo of the most important processes of change in Southeast Asia are industrialisation and urbanisation. Singapore, Manila, Bangkok and Jakarta - all with major ports and coastal development are now ‘mega-cities’ by world standards.
The increasing scarcity of land, increased trading and waterfront activity have led to a number of coastal engineering and management projects in Asia, including expansion of existing ports by government bodies and private companies. On top of this there is an increase in the construction of new jetties, shipyards, marinas and terminals. Examples from across the region include:
  • Clean Container Terminal at Kulpi, India
  • Dikkowita Fishery Harbour, Sri Lanka
  • Jurong Island Coastal Development, Singapore
  • Port of Laem Chabang, Thailand
