The face of forensic science has changed significantly since the
last time the New South Wales Branch of the ANZFSS had the honour of
hosting this symposium in 1996. The public profile of forensic science
has reached an all-time high, bringing with it new challenges
associated with increased scrutiny and higher community expectations.
Changes in the practice of forensic science have also resulted from
organisational reform and from the development and adoption of new
technologies. In many respects, today’s forensic science is at the
crossroads. For example: Should we concentrate on courtroom evidence or
investigative intelligence? Do we generate absolute or statistical
identifications? Should forensic science support or lead
investigations? There is little doubt that the current environment
provides fertile ground for a very exciting symposium!
The Organising Committee plans to offer a stimulating and
innovative scientific and educational program, with strong
international and national participation from a wide cross-section of
individuals connected with forensic science, legal medicine, law
enforcement, security, the judiciary, training and education, research
and development, and policy development. This event is anticipated to
attract over 800 attendees from around the globe.
An excellent social program will aim to provide many
opportunities to network with your colleagues – to renew old friendships
and to establish new ones – in one of the most glamorous and vibrant
cities on the planet. Sydney’s sparkling harbour, dazzling beaches and
sunny subtropical climate will all contribute to making the meeting a
memorable and enjoyable experience.

response to overwhelming demand, a number of volunteers decided to
organise AusNOG Meetings, with the inaugural meeting being held in
2007. The meetings allow for the free exchange of ideas, experiences,
and technical information as well as an opportunity to network with
other members of the industry over a beer or three.
The Internet in Australia is evolving at a rapidly increasing rate. Recent
moves by organisations and governments in our back yard have presented the network operations community with a number of challenges. Some challenges are already here, others will come in time. This year AusNOG-04 is adopting the theme of “Improving the Internet in .AU”.

Aligning people, processes and technology through business agility, collaboration and customer insights to best position your organisation to strategically and effectively respond to change.
In a recent study over 4,000 senior executives from the private and public sector were asked about the main economic challenges that they expect to face in the coming years. Most believe that less emphasis will be placed on the products and services offered by an organisation. Of greater significance will be how quickly they can place themselves to deliver those products and services to customers and how flexibly they respond to market changes.
Business and Process Agility is about organisations being equipped with agile, adaptable, flexible processes that can respond quickly to change, be it an upturn or downturn in the economy, changes in legislation or new technology. Quite simply, the better equipped an organisation is to respond to these changes, the more successful it will be.
