| The aim of this symposium is to bring
together researchers from different fields of computational and
experimental biology, to discuss the use of biomolecular interaction
networks to study cell function in both physiological and pathological
contexts. These interaction maps, also known as interactomes, model
protein-protein, protein-DNA and protein-small molecule interaction
networks either within an organism or within specific cellular
contexts. The function of proteins, nucleic acids, and other
biomolecules can only be defined through their interactions in vivo.
Such biochemical interactions – including those involved in signal
transduction, transcriptional and translational regulation, as well as
in the assembly of large molecular complexes – are astonishing in their
magnitude and diversity. For instance, it has been shown that most
proteins interact with multiple partners, forming intricate interaction
networks. Similarly, individual transcription factor can bind to tens
of thousands of genomic sites and regulate the expression of thousands
of genes, both in isolation and in combinatorial fashion.
Regulatory interactions play a key role in determining cellular
differentiation, in maintaining cellular and organism homeostasis, and
in triggering abnormal differentiation events leading to human disease
including cancer. Not surprisingly, even slight genetic and epigenetic
perturbations of these regulatory pathways can trigger macroscopic
changes in normal cell physiology and lead to disease. Due to the
abundance of experimental data, researchers are starting to uncover
some general rules and principles underlying molecular interaction
networks: their topological properties, the relationships between their
components, evolutionary conservation and divergence, and their role in
maintaining specific cellular functions and processes. Despite
significant advances, however, knowledge about the distinct functional
roles of many proteins is still elusive. Thus, interaction networks
have emerged as exceedingly useful tools in predicting context-specific
molecular function based on knowledge of upstream regulators, cognate
binding partners, and downstream regulated targets. Furthermore,
molecular interaction networks are starting to provide a unique
integrative context to study additional disease-related genetic and
epigenetic data, including single nucleotide mutations and
polymorphisms, gene copy number alterations and complex, polygenic
diseases. |

Otto Warburg initially drew attention
to the distinct metabolic state of tumors compared to normal tissues
over 75 years ago, where tumor cells commonly favor glycolysis over
oxidative phosphorylation even in the presence of oxygen (Warburg
effect or aerobic glycolysis). Insight into the role and mechanism of
this metabolic switch in tumorigenesis, and the utility of and means to
therapeutically exploit altered metabolism in cancer was not clear,
other than for utilization for FDG-PET imaging. Recently the metabolic
requirements of tumor cells and the links to common pathway alterations
in human cancers have been gradually emerging. It is now apparent that
metabolic demand in tumor cells is high due to deregulation of cell
growth, and that this constitutive activation of growth signaling
pathways can disconnect cellular metabolism from nutrient and growth
factor availability. Subversion of cellular metabolism for biosynthetic
purposes is required to sustain deregulated tumor cell growth but can
also restrict energy production that can limit tumor cell adaptation to
metabolic stress. Hypoxic and acidic conditions in the tumor
microenvironment are byproducts of these events and are common features
of the tumor microenvironment that can activate stress responses,
influence tumor growth, and impair treatment. Many of the oncogenic
pathways altered in tumor cells modulate cell metabolism while enabling
growth in these adverse conditions. Adaptation of tumor cells to stress
through activation of the catabolic pathway of autophagy and its role
in damage mitigation and promoting tumor cell survival to metabolic
stress is also now emerging. The vision for this meeting is to bring
together leaders in the fields of cancer, signaling and metabolism to
discuss emerging discoveries and their application to improving cancer
therapy.

| Homeostatic and pathological cell
death can occur through a multiplicity of different mechanisms
including apoptosis, autophagy, necrosis and others. The morphological
and functional definitions of distinct cell death modalities are
emerging, and the relationships between different lethal pathways are
being determined. However, the exact nature of the molecular switches
that determine which subroutines cells disintegrate are elusive.
Moreover, the relative contributions of different cell death modalities
to the avoidance of cancer or degenerative diseases remain to be
defined. In cancer, in particular, where defects in cell death are
prevalent and the survival of undead cells enables progression and
treatment resistance, restoration of cell death pathways is an
important and achievable therapeutic goal. Finally, distinct cell death
modalities may remain immunologically silent or trigger an immune
response, through mechanisms that are still elusive. The 2010 Keystone
Symposia meeting on Cell Death will address the normal regulation and
pathogenic dysfunction of distinct cell death modalities, present new
strategies for therapeutic cancer cell induction and address the
immunogenicity of distinct cell death types. |

| The most exciting recent advances in
viral immunity include the increased understanding of the role of
innate immune mechanisms, interaction between innate and adaptive
immunity, pathogen manipulation of host responses, and activation of
immune responses and generation of immune memory. Despite these
advances, basic mechanisms of anti-viral immunity are poorly
characterized particularly for chronic infections. Efforts are also
required to exploit recent research advances to improve vaccine design
and therapeutic intervention. This meeting will include both innate and
adaptive immunity and juxtapose animal models with human studies as it
attempts to foster collaborative efforts between attending viral
immunologists and the HIV vaccine researchers in the joint meeting.
Expert talks in plenary sessions will encompass the latest in critical
areas of viral immunity. Workshops and additional presentations will
cover provocative and cutting-edge results from attendees. The meeting
objective is to accelerate progress in understanding and manipulating
anti-viral immunity to improve human health. |

| Traditionally, the Keystone Joint HIV
Symposia have integrated vaccines and pathogenesis to comprehensively
cover the field—from HIV’s fundamental biology to its interaction with
the human immune system and how to design a vaccine—and these Joint
Symposia have been convened every year. In addition to this Keystone
Joint Symposium, there are a couple of other well-established HIV
vaccine meetings in the year (CROI and the AIDS Vaccine Conference)
that follow a similar format and also often feature a similar line-up
of speakers. Since an HIV vaccine is proving to be a particularly
recalcitrant problem, a novel approach that facilitates a wider
cross-fertilization of ideas would be very valuable and would be
welcomed by the broader HIV vaccine research community. To that end,
the major development proposed for the 2010 Keystone HIV Vaccine
Symposium is to foster innovative ideas and new collaborations with
immunology and vaccinology as it pertains to other viral diseases.
Specifically, we propose that a new Joint Symposium of HIV Vaccines in
conjunction with Viral Immunity be convened. This Joint Symposium would
retain the valuable format that includes joint and separate sessions
covering general and specific principles. |

| While the importance of developmental
signaling pathways such as Wnt, Notch, TGFb, Hedgehog, Hippo, etc., in
controlling cell fate determination, tissue organization/homeostasis,
and their frequent abrogation in disease has been realized over the
past few years, the molecular processes by which these pathways
conspire combinatorially and temporally to build sophisticated cellular
outcomes is only now becoming apparent. Moreover, simplistic approaches
that selectively interfere with one pathway in isolation have resulted
in unpredicted outcomes and revealed the presence of interdependencies
that require consideration of contextual interactions. Therefore,
effective therapeutic manipulation of these systems will require
understanding of the mechanisms and interdependencies that determine
complex physiology. This is emerging from diverse areas of biology and
so requires a meeting of different minds to assimilate the findings.
This symposium will bring together experts addressing the interactive
mechanisms of developmental signaling with the aim of promoting better
models of networks and the design of more effective therapeutic
strategies. |

technologies has opened up the possibility of comprehensively
monitoring multiple layers of molecular aberrations in cancer.
Alterations in the epigenome, genome, transcriptome, proteome and
metabolome have all been observed in tumor development. A number of key
molecular pathways have been found to be altered during cancer
progression. Pivotal questions in the field include: Can these novel
pathways alone or in combination be effectively targeted in cancer? Can
we identify molecular signatures that will facilitate personalized
medicine? What are the innovative therapeutic modalities that can be
employed to target these pathways? The goal of this meeting is to
tackle promising new targets for cancer therapy. These include targets
such as recurrent gene fusions, epigenetic pathways, and metabolic
networks. We will also explore the use of molecular marker panels to
select patients for treatment. A number of approaches to therapeutic
targeting will be discussed including novel biologics and RNA

Implement Best Legal and Compliance Practices to Minimize Allegations of Abuse and Protect Both Organizations and Children Alike
New claims of sexual assault and abuse against children are being brought against governments, religious institutions and schools alike for both current and historical claims. Institutional liability for foster care situations is a key concern and institutions are unsure of the extent of their liability for the acts of certain types of individuals. Class actions litigation for child abuse claims presents particular challenges with regard to certification and determining quantum of damages, and the ranges in damages awards for abuse claims generally are so wide that anticipating and advising on damages appears next to impossible. Meanwhile, the past year has seen significant case law developments in determining causation factors and assessment of the quantum of damages.
This year’s program provides defence and plaintiff’s counsel and institutions the opportunity to determine the impacts of recent case law, legislative and other trends on litigation strategies and internal risk exposures and processes. Our outstanding faculty will help you to:
- CONSIDER the impacts of the new civil litigation regime in Ontario for abuse cases
- IMPLEMENT state-of-the-art forensic and investigative techniques
- DEVELOP strategies to manage evidentiary challenges in historic abuse claims
- APPLY winning strategies in litigating class action sexual assault and abuse claims
- UNDERSTAND factors contributing to the ranges in damages awards
- EXAMINE recent case law and trends relevant to insurance coverage for institutional liability claims
- And much more!

| This symposium will focus on advances
in our understanding of normal pancreatic b-cell function and
mechanisms of beta-cell failure in type 2 diabetes, which has become a
pandemic disease with estimates of affected individuals reaching 350
millions in 2030. Defects in pancreatic b-cell function and reduced
beta cell mass are now recognized as the event that triggers the
transition from pre-diabetes/metabolic syndrome to overt type 2
diabetes. Major advances have been made in our understanding of
fundamental beta-cell biology, signaling pathways regulating islet
growth, apoptosis, regeneration in normal and disease states, and
development of new strategies for enhancing beta-cell survival and
function. Leading contributors of academic and industrial contributors
alike will carefully discuss recent advances in several disciplines,
including development, regeneration, stem cells, transcription factors,
novel signaling pathways, cell biology, genetics, gene regulation, drug
targeting, as well as emerging technologies in islet research. |

| The increased incidence of Type 2
diabetes mellitus is a growing threat to global health. This chronic
and progressive metabolic disease is characterized by insulin
resistance and beta cell defects, arising from environmental and
genetic factors. Multi-disciplinary approaches that capitalize on
genetic, genomic and physiological disciplines are required to gain
insight into Type 2 diabetes pathogenesis through an increased
understanding of the complicated biology that contributes to the
development of insulin resistance and beta cell failure. The meeting
will focus on latest advancements in our understanding of the molecular
pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes to accelerate the translation of
experimental and clinical discoveries to link phenotype to genotype.
Particular emphasis will be placed on 1) epigenetics, genetics and
pharmacogenomics of metabolic responses, 2) links between pathways
linking obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance and 3) Type 2
diabetes in children and adolescents. A key goal for the meeting will
be to facilitate collaborative interactions between basic and clinical
scientists focused on prediction, prevention, and treatment of insulin
resistance and diabetes. |

In the 30+ years since FASD was first identified, children with FASD have become adults, and many are now in their 30s and even 40s. As time has passed, their changing and emerging needs have become obvious, but the areas of research, experience and front line practice have frequently functioned as separate and parallel systems, rather than intersecting ones. Focused and targeted approaches across multiple areas, services, and systems have recently begun to emerge to address the urgent need for an integrated approach to addressing FASD in adolescence and adulthood. This conference will bring together a diverse group of professionals and families to share research, experience and practice in order to sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities.
-
Continue to expand our understanding of FASD as it presents in adolescence and adulthood and its potential implications and applications.
-
Learn about current findings about adults and adolescents with FASD from scientific, clinical, and community researchers.
-
Learn about innovative programs, projects, and practices that are making a difference.
-
Hear from individuals most directly affected.
- Network, interact and engage in discussion with others in the field.

SCRUTINY OF POLICE FORCES HAS NEVER BEEN MORE INTENSE

The SOS Approach to Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding and weight or growth difficulties. It has been developed over the course of 20 years through the clinical work of Dr. Kay A. Toomey in collaboration with colleagues from several different disciplines including: pediatricians, occupational therapists, dieticians, and speech language pathologists. This program integrates motor, sensory, oral, behaviour / learning, medical and nutritional factors and approaches in order to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. It is based on, and grounded philosophically, on the normal developmental steps, stages, and feeding skills found in typically developing children. The treatment component of the program utilizes the typical developmental feeding steps to create a systematic desensitization hierarchy of skills and behaviours necessary for children to progress in eating various textures, and with growing at an appropriate rate. The assessment component of the program makes sure that all physical reasons for atypical feeding development are examined and treated medically. In addition, the SOS Approach to Feeding identifies any nutritional deficits and creates appropriate recommendations for each individual child’s growth parameters and needs. |

A two-day Interactive Course & Workshops Featuring:

- Factors Which Influence the Growth, Survival and Death of Microorganisms
- Emerging and Presumptive Pathogens: Significance to Food Industry
- Establishing Food Safety Standards

- Microbiological Sampling Criteria
- Microbiological Testing in Food Safety Management

- How to Challenge Laboratory Data
- Validation and Qualification of Premises, Equipment, and Processes in Food Industry
- A simple approach to develop a HACCP plan
About the Course:
Emerging microbiological safety of the food supply and implications are a on-going concern. Although bacteria are perhaps the first type of microorganism that comes to mind when discussing microbiological food safety, they are by no means the only pathogenic foodborne microorganisms. Parasites, viruses, and biotoxins all present food safety challenges, and these agents have properties that make them quite different from the common bacterial agents of foodborne diseases. The continual evolution of microorganisms forces us to change food production processes and products to continue to effectively control microbiological food safety in order to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. An effective food safety system provides an array of public health, social and economic benefits.
This two-day course is intended to bring key scientific concepts and tools developed for food safety management, and good practices of commissioning and carrying out real-world food safety risk analyses for bacteria, viruses and biotoxins. The course is carefully designed to address systematic approaches to the identification, evaluation and control of hazards at identified points within a food production and processing system. Covering the basics of lab testing techniques and safety, this hands-on, two-day event teaches participants up-to-date techniques for performing microbiological tests covering a variety of quantitative and qualitative procedures for the identification of non-pathogenic organisms.

This curriculum is designed to suit the educational needs of primary care and emergency physicians working in varied clinical settings. This course will cover multiple orthopedic topics that are relevant to emergency and primary care practice. Particular emphasis will be placed on the latest evidence and the current standards of practice. Through a didactic and case-based approach, this course will harness the unique skill sets of the orthopedic and emergency medicine specialists to review the “not-to-be-missed” injuries.
This conference will be structured into four educational tracks, each led by a distinguished speaker specializing in that field. Those will include: shoulder injuries, knee and spine specifics and finally an Emergency Medicine update.
The topics were chosen to provide a broad-based set of orthopedic topics commonly encountered by emergency and family medicine physicians. This is of particular relevance given the high prevalence of orthopedic injuries/problems in the primary care/emergency setting.
Learning needs were assessed by discussions with other conference organizers (St. Paul’s Emergency Medicine Update, Canadian Alpine Ski Team Medical Group, etc) and by observation of presenters and participants at Family Medicine/Emergency Medicine/Sport Medicine scientific conferences. In addition, this curriculum was designed in keeping with feedback received at a prior Track & Trail event, where delegates expressed particular interest in furthering their orthopedic knowledge. |

The disease is initiated when cholesterol-rich low-density lipoproteins adhere to the walls of arteries, triggering a complex set of reactions involving a variety of cell types including macrophages, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and lymphocytes. This initial lesion progresses to a more complicated atherosclerotic plaque through subsequent cell-cell and cell-lipid interactions that cause chronic inflammation, extracellular alterations, and necrosis. These responses promote plaque disruption, which triggers acute thrombosis resulting in vascular occlusion and myocardial infarction. The goal of this meeting is to provide attendees with the latest advances in the understanding of cellular processes that contribute to atherosclerosis, with particular emphasis on cholesterol metabolism and foam cell formation, genetics, and the immune system. These goals will be significantly enhanced by holding the meeting concurrently with the proposed meeting, The Macrophage: Intersection of Pathogenic and Protective Inflammation. In addition to four atherosclerosis-specific plenary sessions, four joint sessions are planned to highlight major developments in areas of mutual interest to investigators in the fields of atherosclerosis and macrophage biology. Elucidation of mechanisms underlying development of atherosclerosis may reveal new therapeutic strategies to combat the disease. This program will stimulate interactions that are likely to augment and accelerate this process. |

Recent insights into macrophage
biology have focused on their prodigiously varied roles: as sensors,
effectors and regulators of immunity; as cells central to tissue repair
and homeostasis; as the host cell of diverse pathogens; and as cells
pivotal to the pathogenesis of numerous inflammatory diseases. The
conservation of underlying common mechanisms of macrophage activation
and subsequent control forms the overall thematic organization of this
meeting. A special focus will be on areas of macrophage biology that
are often neglected, including the role of macrophages in inflammatory
diseases not obviously linked to pathogens including atherosclerosis,
cancer, metabolic diseases and other forms of ‘sterile’ inflammation.
The meeting is intended to provide a state-of-the-art overview of
macrophage biology, to highlight the translational implications of this
work, to provide researchers with access to diverse model systems,
topics and levels of investigation, and to help define the most
important questions to be addressed.

Evolution and Emerging Issues, Challenges and Best Practices
|
Dear Colleague:
Over the past several years, the Hospitalist Model has gained considerable traction as an efficient and reliable system for meeting the care needs of hospitalized patients. Hospitalist programs exist in a variety of shapes and sizes. Several common issues however, require immediate attention in order for this model to live up to its potential for becoming the benchmark standard of inpatient care.
Physician compensation remains one of the top challenges facing hospital administrators, government policy decision-makers and hospitalists themselves. Hospitalist providers often require income ‘top-ups’ that ultimately flow from hospital global budgets. At a time when hospitals are already struggling to balance their budgets, the current funding situation is not sustainable.
Hospitalist care is not without its potential pitfalls. Important information can fall through the cracks; particularly when patients transition through the continuum of outpatient and inpatient care. Better integration and communication with community based systems and strategies of care will be required. The issue of the ‘orphan’ patient often remains unresolved when the patient leaves the hospital. Hospitalist programs nevertheless can have a substantial impact on improving patient safety, patient management, throughput and appropriate placement.
This Insight Information conference is an important opportunity to hear a variety of viewpoints from experienced practitioners and other influential opinion leaders. We invite you to participate in this interactive discussion concerning the future of hospital based care in Canada. It’s an opportunity that we believe you won’t want to miss.
Sincerely, |
|

The energy sector in Ontario is undergoing tremendous change with the passing of the Green Energy and Green Economy Act (GEGEA) and, with it, come significant environmental and socio-economic opportunities, and challenges.
To meet infrastructure demands as we adapt to a more sustainable, green energy economy, the Ontario Government has earmarked a number of long term transmission projects in areas with significant potential for renewable power generation. In turn, local distribution companies (LDCs) are now obligated to connect distributed and renewable generation projects to the distribution grid, including two-way distribution for those customers who want to install solar panels on their roof or connect larger solar, wind and biofuel projects.
The Ontario Power Authority has also come out with one of the most aggressive new Feed-In Tariff programs for renewable energy in North America which will make investments in renewable energy and community power projects competitive with conventional long term investments. Accordingly, the Ontario Energy Board’s mandate continues to grow to ensure the appropriate regulations are in place.
This Insight Information conference will offer a focused, practical and informative two-day program of thought-provoking panels and presentations, delivered by leading experts and decision makers in the field. Hear about the latest developments underway to transform Ontario’s economy into a green economy and the economic growth and employment prospects that go hand in hand with these developments. For added value, you may wish to take advantage of the in-depth, interactive workshops that will help you successfully navigate new funding programs being offered by the Ontario Power Authority.
