This advanced and interactive course aims to give you a solid grounding in the knowledge and skills that are required to work as a nutritional epidemiologist. Participants are expected to have postgraduate level experience (MSC or PHD) in epidemiology.
The course will consist of lectures, computer tutorials, debates and discussions with experts and a small group assignment, with particular focus on current controversies in the field.
We will place strong emphasis on assessment of exposure (to include diet, body size, and physical activity), methodological considerations in study design, and pertinent statistical issues, including how best to address measurement error and adjust for total energy intake.
You will learn to critically interpret results from nutritional epidemiological studies and evaluate the association between a given nutritional factor and disease. Current priorities in nutritional epidemiology, its future potential and challenges will be discussed. We will also address the translation of scientific findings into nutritional recommendations and policies.
Some of the themes and issues you learn about will be further explored in the subsequent World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF International) 2-day conference, covering both the science and policy aspects of nutrition, physical activity and cancer prevention.
NanoteC is one of the longest running series of international nanoscale carbon conferences in Europe (since 1998). It brings together scientists working with nanoscale carbon materials: nanotubes, graphene, diamond- and fullerene-related nanostructures. While each of these materials attracts its own dedicated community of researchers, NanoteC draws on common themes and allows researchers to share insight into this unique element at the nanoscale.
Elemental carbon shows remarkable variety in properties via simple covalent bonding, however other systems (for example containing nitrogen or metals) are becoming important and provide alternative components with unique mechanical and electronic properties. Nanotechnology requires an understanding of these materials on an atomic level and this will be the central theme.
The NanoteC conferences are renowned for their relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with emphasis on discussion and participation. We endeavour to achieve as much student participation as possible, and we anticipate that the keynote talks will be strongly influential on the next generation of nanotechnology scientists. Contributed talks are also mainly attributed to young researchers.
This year NanoteC10 will be held at Corpus Christi College in Oxford, with ~100 (maximum 135) participants from around the world, 12 sessions (non-parallel) with about 10 keynote and 30 contributed talks, as well as a poster session, with posters available for discussion throughout the conference.

On behalf of the International Board of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (IBSES) I wish to extend a very warm welcome to you all to our 11th international meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Edinburgh International Conference Centre is superb and right at the heart of one of our most compact and friendly cities which should encourage everyone to meet together and enjoy the occasion. Every three years our international conference (ICSES) is held in a different host city around the world. The site is decided by a ballot of the delegates 6 years in advance. This is the first time that it has been held in Scotland but not the first time for Great Britain. The very first meeting was organised by Prof. Lipmann Kessell in London in 1980. So I am very proud to be chairman at the time it returns home to our shores. I was present at the original meeting and am thrilled at the way shoulder surgery has advanced and evolved over the years. Each meeting has been very different but each one has made a statement as to where we are and what we have achieved within the medical scientific community. The local organising committee headed by Angus Wallace have worked enormously hard to arrange the meeting so that it will be enjoyable both academically and socially. The competition for paper acceptance is always high and ensures that the quality of the free paper sessions improves with each meeting. Roger Emery has been in charge of the scientific committee ensuring that the papers are judged in the most democratic manner. There are also instructional update symposia and workshops by the best speakers in the shoulder and elbow world. There are exciting changes happening in our fast moving speciality and we must represent all. The ICSES is unique in that it is the showcase of the views of those involved in shoulder and elbow surgery throughout the world. We are a very special group and meeting every three years gives us a great opportunity to make new friends and renew old acquaintances.
Welcome to Scotland and Edinburgh, I hope you all have a very happy and rewarding meeting.
