Enterprise Virtualization & Cloud Computing
As companies throughout the world examine the business value of cloud computing, it is important to understand how cloud can lower IT expenses.
Based on a shared infrastructure where pools of resources are linked together, clouds can be delivered in private, public or a hybrid of both to provide the delivery of services. Many organizations today are looking to implement private clouds as a better way to respond to customer needs and manage the delivery of services in a more cost effective manner.
Virtualization is one of the key enabling technologies for the cloud, which can lead corporations and ISVs to:
Foster rapid innovation and decision-making.
Increase agility to respond quickly in today’s highly competitive environment.
Greatly reduce capital expenditures – including data center energy costs – by effectively accessing IT capacity only when needed.
Establish and ensure greater business continuity and disaster recovery strategies.
Reduce the need for IT infrastructure experts so those technical resources can be redirected toward applications that are more focused on the core competencies of the business.
Ensure transparency through Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that protect the customer whether resources are managed by their IT department or managed outside of their firewall in the cloud.
Understanding all facets of this technology reveals a new opportunity for the IT industry to no longer be seen simply as an infrastructure but as a means for better business.
IT & the Bottom Line
To be effective, IT must be aligned and attuned to the service needs and strategies of the core business. IT organizations and departments must be viewed as a partner in planning for business success. In turn, enterprise IT professionals must be able to express how these services directly relate to the business strategies of the company.
IT organizations must continuously deal with competing budget priorities in these difficult economic times and demonstrate their worth by contributing to organizational effectiveness and efficiencies, while realizing cost-savings. Here are some examples:
Increase efficiencies from existing investments
Optimize resource utilization through virtualization
Track and assign costs through asset management
Deliver service while using less power, space and cooling, thus reducing costs
Employ best practices as described by ITIL to ensure delivery of quality service
Eliminate/centralize duplicated IT services across the organization
Respond quickly to changing business needs through rapid provisioning of IT services
Ensure optimum customer satisfaction by provided agreed upon levels of service
Manage resources according to business priorities
Eliminate IT investments that do not deliver business value
There are many more, but the key is to communicate IT initiatives in a way that shows value to the business and to the bottom line. It`s not about the technology or technical excellence; it`s about improved business results.

The Promise of a Whole New Range of Applications, Opportunities and Capabilities
Government and military users across the spectrum of strategic and tactical roles and missions are clamoring for more and better means to collect, analyze, exploit and share full motion video. And while the deployment of a fleet of unmanned systems has led to a significant increase in the amount of video that can be captured, the means to exploit that video for near-real time analysis and dissemination lags behind. Multiple, competing video formats, interoperability challenges with legacy ISR stovepipes, the somewhat limited capabilities of current data tagging and metadata tools, and problems associated with already-strained, bandwidth-constricted ISR networks -- all these issues will need to be dealt with if FMV capabilities are to be fully realized.
This outstanding conference brings together the key players and organizations in the FMV community. They will examine the latest OSD, Service and Intelligence community ISR and FMV needs, initiatives, plans and challenges.
International students play an important part in institutional recruiting strategies because of their contributions to mission, campus diversity, and net tuition revenue. However, as the global community shifts and as certain regional economies shrink and grow, enrollment managers are challenged to find ways to keep their recruitment efforts fruitful, cost effective, and mission-focused.
Join us to explore the core components of a comprehensive international student recruitment strategy including best practices for outreach, communications, onsite travel, use of agents, and assessment techniques. You will also hear about current geo-political and economic trends that affect international recruiting in different sectors.

Military Energy and Alternative Fuels – R&D for Security, Efficiency, and Deployed Mobile Power
The rising cost of military fuels, coupled with the instability of foreign supplier markets, is driving DoD to mandate increased efficiencies in fuel use and to develop alternatives to traditional fossil fuels. National Energy Security has become a prime imperative, impacting not only US and Western economic objectives but also military objectives, strategies, roles and missions.
This outstanding conference brings together the major organizations and key experts who are charged with leading the way for OSD and the Services in getting this critical cost burden under control. The solution will be complex. Much will depend on making future systems, platforms and weapons more fuel efficient. However, DoD is also banking on US technological ingenuity to provide the next generation of alternative fuel solutions. How can your organization get involved?
Last year, DoD networks suffered an onslaught of an estimated 360 million cyber attacks. As cyber attacks on US federal and commercial computer systems increase at alarming rates, the risk for national security to be compromised is also growing. Through cyber espionage and data theft, China acquired Joint Strike Fighter (JSF-35) aircraft plans. On eBay, a hard drive containing US missile defense data was for sale. Both the State of Virginia and the University of California, Berkley suffered network and database breaches to their healthcare IT systems. Critical infrastructure is being hit by an estimated 1000 or more attacks from hackers and malicious code every year. The financial and economic impacts of a one day cyber sabotage to disrupt energy infrastructure and US financial transactions is estimated at over $35 billion USD.
The 2010 national cyber budget will be in the excess of $7 billion USD, but is that enough? Given our ever-increasing reliance on digital connectivity, and with the reality of intensifying cyber threats from states such as China and Russia, it is a national imperative that the US directly engages these threats in order to avert potential catastrophe.
Irregular Warfare — Impact of the New Warfighting Paradigm
DoD Directive 3000.07, released in December 2008, places the mission of irregular warfare on an equal footing with conventional warfare in future military planning. Irregular Warfare objectives are to provide a continuum of strategies, tools, and capabilities for dealing with tomorrow`s complex and increasingly asymmetrical challenges to US military and geo-political interests, including new approaches for dealing with counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and the stabilization and reconstruction/rehabilitation of adversary states and entities. Lessons learned from counter-insurgency (COIN), counter-terror, and stability operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, are driving the formulation of new IW policy, which will in turn impact future military strategy, doctrine, operations, procurement/capital investment, and support. How can your organization play a role?
This outstanding conference brings together the key experts and critical organizations who will be shaping the development of irregular warfare. They will examine the latest information on OSD and Service formulation of needs, initiatives, roles and responsibilities for “IW.”

With the economy still challenging development pros to produce
mission-critical software quickly, the Java community continues to seek
the most effective ways to accelerate the production of software that
can have an immediate impact on an organization’s bottom line.
Infrastructure projects and strategic initiatives such as content
management are out. Far fewer of us are working on packaged apps such
as SAP and Oracle, which are also more strategic in nature. This means
that veteran developers are being taken from known technologies and
thrust into quick-hitting projects that can involve unfamiliar
architectures and technologies, making the need to get up to speed on
these technologies fast.
All this coupled with ongoing change
— especially with the acquisition of Sun by Oracle and SpringSource by
VMware — means that an air of uncertainty is felt over the industry as
a whole. Change can be good but rumors and unanswered questions still
abound. This makes the need for specific, proven advice on exactly what
tools, techniques, and frameworks can truly empower you to build
complex distributed apps quickly a paramount concern. So where can you
turn for help without breaking the bank?

Nuclear receptors represent a family
of ligand-regulated transcription factors that play central roles in
development, physiology, and metabolism. Upon binding small lipophilic
hormones and metabolites, such as steroids, fatty acids, and bile
acids, nuclear receptors switch their regulatory status, reprogramming
gene expression in target tissues. Current research is aimed at
defining roles for these receptors in normal development and metabolism
as well as better understanding how nuclear receptor dysfunction
contributes to diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and
neuronal disorders. Nuclear receptors are also a major target for drug
development, with many compounds on the market and several in ongoing
human trials. This meeting will highlight recent breakthroughs in
nuclear receptor research, promote interactions between scientists from
industry and academia, and provide opportunities for senior scientists
to interact with younger researchers and trainees.
Nuclear receptors (NRs) comprise a
large family of ligand-regulated transcription factors that play
critical roles in physiology and disease. Much of the focus has been on
the nuclear actions of NRs, including interactions with coregulators,
modulation of chromatin structure, and regulation of gene expression.
Recent studies, however, have also suggested a role for membrane- or
cytoplasmic-initiated actions of NRs and crosstalk with other cellular
signaling pathways. Current studies are aimed at understanding how the
ligand-dependent molecular actions of NRs, including their subcellular
localization, binding across the genome, and interaction with the
proteome, connect to their roles in physiological and
pathophysiological processes, including hormone-regulated cancers. In
addition, NRs are being explored as targets for drug development, with
many compounds on the market or in ongoing clinical trials. This
meeting will highlight recent breakthroughs in NR research, promote
interactions between scientists from industry and academia, and provide
opportunities for senior scientists to interact with younger
researchers and trainees.

Today - the current fleet of ISR aircraft is in the highest demand for any airframe platform in history.
These aircraft are of such importance that the insufficient numbers
negatively affects every facet of the battlefield and compromises the
safety of the troops on the ground and inhibits seamless direction and
operations.
The net effect of the presently degraded ISR sensor tasking and command and control network is a reduction in both the `kill-chain,` the time it takes to find, identify, and engage a target,
and the operator workload required to accomplish the task. This has
necessitated the U.S. and NATO commanders in Afghanistan and the
current theater to look for new intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tools to help secure territory.
Because of the urgency of this issue, Secretary
Gates has instituted a system to deliver Non-traditional means of ISR
in six months or less, most often translates to requirements,
maintenance needs, equipment concepts, and funding!

Vigorous enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act continues to be a priority for the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission, across industries and around the globe.
At ACI’s November 2009 conference, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, DOJ Deputy Chief Mark Mendelsohn and SEC Associate Director Cheryl Scarboro announced the following 2009 FCPA enforcement achievements:
Record number of 130 open FCPA investigations
Focus on criminal prosecution and civil enforcement of individuals
Guilty verdicts in criminal jury trials of former Congressman William Jefferson, American investor Frederic Bourke, and Patricia and Gerald Green
Landmark prosecutions of Siemens and KBR
Increased use of disgorgement of profits
Predictions regarding future enforcement trends include more investigations against companies and individuals, more industry-wide corruption probes, increased cooperation with foreign enforcement authorities, and continued use of compliance monitors.
The increase of FCPA enforcement makes prevention an even higher priority than it may have been in the past. The absence of preventative measure is almost certain to result in substantially increased penalties if an issue arises. This makes an effective anti-corruption compliance program essential for all companies. With record-setting sanctions involving well-known companies, global organizations have to reassess their own anti-corruption measures to prevent lapses that might lead to damaging and costly enforcement actions.
Over the past 20 years, the American Conference Institute has had the pleasure of welcoming the US and international Anti-Corruption community for the largest conference of its kind in the world. ACI’s National Conference on the FOREIGN CORRUPT PRACTICES ACT, back to New York for its 23rd iteration, is the event that corporate counsel, compliance officers, outside counsel and accountants rely on for comprehensive, insightful, and practical guidance on critical FCPA compliance issues. Benefit from the practical perspective of seasoned corporate FCPA compliance executives, get an update on enforcement and policy initiatives from top Government officials and FCPA attorneys, and learn how industry is setting up internal controls to comply in this constantly changing global legal landscape. This year’s agenda includes the latest information on:
Changes you need to make to your compliance program as a result of recent cases against companies and individuals
How government agencies evaluate voluntary disclosures
Deciding whether you`ve investigated "enough": how much is enough in trying to learn the facts?
Risks and concerns when a joint-venture partner is a governmental entity

Never before have pharmaceutical companies been so pressured by issues arising simultaneously on the state, national and international level. At this uniquely trying time, day-to-day activities can become the focus of inquiries by members of Congress, investigations by federal and/or state prosecutors, and whistleblower claims. In addition, companies must keep track of legislative initiatives seeking broader industry disclosures and comply with new reporting requirements.
As such, companies must now focus on revising internal practices to meet the new standards that have been set, taking extra precautions to ensure that they are minimizing the risk of being accused of engaging in activities that constitute off label promotion or violate the False Claims Act or the FCPA.

The Forum conference theme, "Vision
and Value in Education Abroad” takes up the central importance of
creating and maintaining a compelling vision for education aboad while
communicating its value. The conference will focus on articulating the
vital nature of education abroad and the many benefits that it brings
to students, organizations, institutions, communities and societies.
This theme is especially important as we address the challenges brought
on by the current global economic crisis, when both the vision and the
value of education abroad may be called into question.
The conference will address how vision and value
shape education abroad in all its contexts. “Vision” encompasses the
mission, goals, curriculum, program designs and models, and how
students, parents, faculty, administrators and education abroad
professionals think about and describe education abroad. Vision refers
to the act of imagination that leads to the creation of education
abroad programs, often involving collaborations between faculty,
program providers, sending and host institutions. Our vision of
education abroad has evolved over time: programs have responded to
developments in technology, communications, travel, economics, politics
and culture, and the way that we describe our programs and their
importance has also changed. A student’s vision is shaped and re-shaped
before, during and after the education abroad experience, and program
providers and home and host institutions envision education abroad in a
wide variety of ways that shape student learning. “Value” refers to the meaning that education abroad has for students,
faculty, institutions, communities and societies. Knowledge of other
cultures and societies, disciplinary learning, intercultural skills,
language skills, personal growth and development, and career
enhancement are but some of the associated values that education abroad
has for students. A characteristic of the value of education abroad is
the way in which it can foster a variety of outcomes, which require
multiple modes of assessment. For organizations and institutions,
assessing and articulating the value of education abroad is a central
challenge, especially during a period when there are questions raised
about the price and cost of higher education.

Mock Trial in Medical Malpractice
The Medical Malpractice Mock Trial is a superb method for educating physicians and nurses about the legal system and prepare them to confront trial proceedings with more objectivity and less fear of the judicial process. Mock trials are staged in Law schools to teach Law students and Attorneys about trial procedure and technique. Mock trials are also effective methods of educating physicians about medical malpractice lawsuits. This medical malpractice trial comprises: 1. A Trial Judge; 2. Plaintiff and defense medical malpractice attorneys; 3. Case presentation; 4. Examination of expert medical witnesses for both sides; and 5. A jury. The mock trial presents to physician attendees different sides of the issue in a legal setting. Presenting both the medical evidence and the final outcome of the lawsuit points out how important the decisions doctors make are, and the ramifications they can have. Following the mock trial, the attendee physicians spend time talking about what they would have done differently during a panel session.
Objectives of the Mock Trial
1. Identify major professional liability risks presented in the mock trial case study. 2. Learn the correlating risk management practices and strategies for minimizing or avoiding those risks in everyday professional practice. 3. Learn the major components of a medical malpractice trial, including the concepts of standard of care and negligence. 4. Participate as the jury in deliberating about the verdict in an obstetrical case which involves injury to the newborn. 5. Learn what actions a defendant-physician can take during litigation to increase the chances of a successful outcome. 6. Become familiar with what acts or omissions of the defendant-physician a plaintiff attorney looks for in a case in order to demonstrate negligence and liability on the part of the defendant-physician. 7. Become familiar with what acts or omissions of the defendant-physician a defense attorney looks for in a case in order to defend against charges of negligence and liability on the part of the defendant-physician. 8. Understand the roles of the defense and plaintiff expert witnesses in medical malpractice litigation. 9. Understand the role of the judge in a medical malpractice trial. The mock trial benefits also include an improvement in writing more complete notes in the medical records, as some day those notes may be projected onto a courtroom big screen.

High-performance exists at the intersection of leadership,
communication, management and results. For an organization to achieve
its goals, leaders must motivate, inspire and harness the talents of
its most valuable resource – people. There are innate and intangible
qualities that define leadership, but to achieve excellence, a leader
must constantly develop and evolve. The path to excellence challenges
an individual to develop new skills and methods to inspire a diverse
and ever-changing workforce.
A 21st century leader must move beyond management and utilize innovation for organizational success.
Three courses encompass this training:
Course One: Refining Interpersonal Communication for Management Excellence
Course Two: Engaging Employees for Greater Workforce Productivity and Success
Course Three: Using Innovation and Creativity to Drive Organizational Performance
Following this course, the participant should be able to implement practical & cost effective methods available in making a preliminary diagnosis; employ effective history and physical exam techniques; differentiate when they should treat certain disorders versus when to refer for specialist care. This activity is expected to result in increased confidence in making an appropriate diagnosis and providing effective treatment and referral or follow-up care with the overall goal of improving patient outcomes.
The emphasis will be on current guidelines and evidence-based medicine, as indicated within each topic’s specific objectives, with a focus on diagnosis, treatment and when to refer. Since the specialty of Neurology is one that demands great clinical acumen, this course was designed as a review and update for all practitioners at the level of a practicing physician in an effort to improve their skills in making appropriate clinical decisions and diagnoses without excessive testing.
The broad scope of the primary care physician’s practice incorporates management of acute, undiagnosed illness and complex, multisystem disease, as well as the provision of extensive preventive care and general health promotion. Primary care physicians are most often the first medical practitioner contacted by a patient. Therefore, the daily clinical challenges require a distinct approach and special skills in eliciting concerns, focusing key issues, negotiating plans, and helping solve problems; as well as collaborating actively with referral specialists and coordinating the care given by varied organizations. All this is firmly based in the context of a patient-physician relationship built on mutual trust and knowledge.
With this in mind, this CME conference will educate and promote im¬proved patient outcomes in a broad range of therapeutic areas commonly encountered in the busy primary care practice. In addition to an overview of the history and current science of a variety of specialty areas, content will be presented in a very practical, patient-focused manner relevant to the specific primary care setting and challenges.
The NA Standards Spring 2010 meetings will take place on March 29 through April 1 in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara, California. This meeting set will host nine committees and over 60 task forces engaged in various standardization activities including:

The first Web 2.0 innovations helped us make new connections on a
global scale. The rise of location-aware tools, linked with the growing
ubiquity of real-time, social, and mobile, is swinging the pendulum
back to the human and local scale.
Location has permeated our collective wisdom, informing our online
and in-person experiences, our business models, and our ability to
change the world. Location information is a force for both opportunity
and disruption, ready to explode our assumptions about the limits of
the internet operating system.
The dramatic increase in the number of products, companies, and
people affected by the expansion of location technologies has shaped
the 2010 edition of Where 2.0 into three distinct, simultaneous tracks:
Mapping for Everyone
Advanced consumers now expect location to be a requisite feature, helping us to make more informed choices, from a new home purchase
to following our favorite food cart. Some ignore location at their
peril, but savvy companies are already leveraging location information
to engage customers via new mapping data , augmented reality , and relevant data layers . Even Wall Street has started integrating geodata into its business intelligence applications .
Mobile Innovations
It`s
not just consumers who have taken to the increased access to
information on their hand-held devices. Businesses, institutions, and
organizations are all becoming significant players in the mobile arena
along all points of the global-local axis, building multiplatform services on the cheap . Smartphones and other devices equipped with mapping apps are forcing stand-alone navigational devices—and their business model— into obsolescence .
Meanwhile, corporate behemoths are taking the "location is everywhere"
mantra to new heights. Apple, with its recent geo acquisitions and
overtures to Microsoft, is positioned to compete head-on with Google for location domination.
Local and Marketing Opportunities and Models
Mass
consumer adoption of mapping and location-aware technologies has
inspired restaurants and Main Street merchants to use tools like foursquare and Yelp to drive new traffic. Are local search and advertising tools really making money, even in this down economy?

The continued improvements in our ability to synthesize and fabricate nanostructures over the past decades have fueled tremendous growth in the area of nanoscience and nanoengineering. A variety of well developed ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up/self-assembly’ techniques are now available to the researcher to create a wide range of nanoscale materials, with often unique and technologically appealing properties. In many cases, practical applications of nanostructures require the ability to pattern nanoscale electrical contacts and interconnects. Low resistance Ohmic contacts and low RC interconnect delay, for example, are essential for optimum performance of traditional (Si based) nanocircuits. Similar requirements hold true for optoelectronics, energy scavenging, or chem/bio sensor devices based on emerging nanomaterials, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and nanowires. Schottky or rectifying contacts form the basis for a range of rf detector/mixer and high current rectifier devices. As device dimensions shrink below 45 nm, and as new materials with novel composition and geometry are explored for `next generation` s applications, the underlying physics of contact and interconnect formation and carrier transport needs to be re-examined. Single wall carbon nanotubes, for example, have a quasi-one-dimensional density of states and a relatively inert surface which results in less Fermi level pinning and a strong dependence of the contact barrier height on the metal workfunction. In addition, to assess the new properties of nanocontacts, a detailed experimental determination of structural and electronic properties of these interfaces is needed, which is often complicated by the buried nature of these interfaces. This workshop will address both theoretical and experimental approaches to understanding formation, carrier transport, reliability, and applications of metal/semiconductor nanocontacts and nanointerconnects.
Specific topics include: contact formation and transport at metal contacts to nanotubes, nanowires, graphene, quantum dots, and other nanomaterials; microstructure and morphology of nanointerfaces; reliability and stability of nanointerconnects and nanocontacts; applications of interconnects and nanocontacts in electronics, photonics, sensors, and energy scavenging; novel and established characterization methods applied to nanocontacts; theory and modeling of contact formation and transport at nanointerfaces; integration issues for practical interconnect and contact/metallization schemes for large arrays of nanostructures.

Gene expression in eukaryotes is
regulated primarily at the level of transcription. Although much is
known about the basic building blocks required to recruit RNA
polymerase II to a gene promoter and establish a pre-initiation
complex, recent data reveals that a great deal of regulation occurs
during transcription elongation, and involves dynamic interactions
between the transcription machinery and chromatin structure. This
meeting is intended to explore these recently appreciated mechanisms
for gene regulation and to showcase the novel techniques that have
permitted these advances. Of particular interest are the use of
comprehensive, genomic approaches, and their use towards understanding
the different patterns of gene expression in different model systems,
including stem cells and developing tissues, as well as the application
of novel molecular probing and cell imaging techniques to investigate

As a result of course participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment surveys, the need for cutting edge information about vascular lab non-invasive testing has been identified. Vascular lab physicians, technologists, and nurses in northern California need regional educational programs to keep abreast of changes in the field and to meet credentialing requirements. The course is designed to change or improve physician and technologist competence in areas of non-invasive testing as identified in the needs assessments. This year¿s conference will also provide up-to-date information in the areas of physiologic testing, initial diagnosis, endovascular treatment, preoperative assessments, long term surveillance, and vascular lab management topics. The program will also provide technologists with state-of-the art tools to improve vascular lab testing and diagnosis for their patients. Faculty presenting and interacting with participants at this activity have been selected on the basis of their comprehensive clinical experience and academic excellence.
The CIO Summit provides executives with the opportunity to interact with innovative solution providers, with whom they can partner to build innovation in the IT department. During a period of three days, attendees will interact with nationally recognized thought leaders as well as network with peers who are experts in the Information Systems and Technology field, allowing CIOs to walk away from the event with tools and strategies to dramatically catapult the IT Department from a cost center to a revenue driver.
Creating an environment that promotes innovative thinking within the IT department is essential. Virtualization is widespread and is resulting in substantial cost savings and lowering disaster recovery response times. Integrating various systems is always a challenge amongst IT departments, and discovering tools to overcome these challenges is central to the CIOs role. Security remains a special concern as we are faced with an environment where the aggressors have access to more intelligence, with a wider array of tools available. Today’s environment is also set for mergers and acquisitions to become more prevalent. Determining how to allocate the IT budget across these needs is always a challenge as there will be tradeoffs. There will be no tolerance for obsolescence or obscurity.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental
disorder defined by the co-occurrence of a set of characteristic
behavioral features. One of the most common neurodevelopmental
disorders, autism is recognized as heterogeneous in etiology,
phenotype, behavioral trajectory and response to treatment. While the
etiology and specific pathogenetic mechanisms underlying autism are
unknown, those mechanisms which underlie a small subset of
etiologically-defined neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., Fragile X
Syndrome, tuberous sclerosis), that are associated with autism and
autistic behaviors, have been well described. The overarching aim of
this Keystone Symposia meeting will be to take advantage of our
knowledge of etiologic heterogeneity by examining the phenomenology and
pathophysiology of etiologically-defined autistic syndromes, and
contrasting this with what is known about idiopathic autism, in order
to ultimately shape the development of treatment approaches informed by
knowledge of the underlying pathophysiology.
This conference will bring together clinical and basic scientists from
various disciplines to expand on the success of an earlier Keystone
Symposia meeting on this topic by additionally: 1) covering a broader
number of etiologically-defined autistic syndromes; 2) comparing and
contrasting the phenomenology (including physical features, behavior
and neural circuitry) of autistic syndromes, to refine ideas regarding
etiologically-meaningful aspects of the autism phenotype; 3) examining
the role of the environment (epigenetic influences) in contributing to
the etiology and underlying mechanisms of autism (including idiopathic
autism and autistic syndromes), with the aim of elucidating a more
comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of autistic
behavior; and 4) examining how gene-by-environment (GxE) factors impact
synaptic function and plasticity that may lie at the heart of autism
syndromes. Goals:
1. Define more precisely the common and unique clinical features of
syndromic and idiopathic autism. The field needs a realistic view of
autism heterogeneity with regard to phenotype expression, longitudinal
course and diversity in response to treatment. What are key differences
in the social and communication domains between individuals with Rett,
Fragile X, Angelman Syndromes compared to idiopathic autisms? To what
extent is the heterogeneity in single gene disorders similar or
different than in idiopathic autisms, for example, in relation to
mental health issues?
2. Provide novel insight into the role of complex genetic mechanisms in
autism. To what extent do we understand how different genetic
etiologies (CNVs, syndromic disorders common variants) contribute to
the autism? Can we better understand the role of specific genetic
modifiers that result in expression of the core clinical and other
symptoms in distinct syndromic and idiopathic autism? 3. Provide a
basic understanding of and define the roles for epigenetics in
understanding the causes of the autism. How are specific gene X
environment interactions relevant to the study of the autisms? How can
studies of cancer and other common diseases inform those working on the
autisms regarding the roles of gene modification in the disorder
process? Are there ways in which clinical and basic studies can
integrate efforts to define epistatic and epigenetic factors in the
autisms?
4. Examine the common cellular mechanisms that underlie the autisms.
Re-examine the disconnection-synapse hypothesis of the autisms through
a new perspective of factors that influence synapse formation and
maturation. Is the synapse most vulnerable in most brain disorders in
general due to the magnitude of the molecular machinery that goes into
making, breaking and stabilizing synapses?
