Spreading for hundreds of miles from the mouth of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the largest city by area in Europe and is liberally covered in pristine forests rising up into the outlying hills. South of the unassuming city hall lies a vibrant waterfront known as Aker Brygge, which in summer is full of bustling outdoor restaurants and bars.
For the prettiest buildings head to affluent inner-city suburbs of Frogner and Fagerborg, or admire the traditional Scandinavian wooden houses of Bygdøy and Holmenkollen. Monumental buildings include the Royal Palace which runs daily tours and the Akershus Festning, which is a medieval castle that also served as a military base and provides impressive views of the Oslofjord. Oslo City Hall, or rådhus, offers even more distinctive architecture and it is the location of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Nature is never far away in Oslo which is ringed by an archipelago of islands which are extremely popular in summer. Hiking, kayaking and sailing are all easily achievable within the city limits. Just as popular are the many museums. The national Museum houses Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream and Viking Ship Museum containing long-lost relics from Norway’s Viking past.
From downtown Sentrum to the Oslo Airport Gardermoen to the stunning statues in Frogner Park, Booking.com has over 80 hotels and other accommodations available.
Oslo is a vivd and modern city. You would hardly find old buildings around it. It's all bout architecture and skyscrapers. So, if you admire modern architecture, it's defenitely a catch.
My favourite sight was the National Gallery with a number of interesting displays and amazing staff who seemed personally involved in enhancing your experience. One more thing to 100% add to your bucket list is theDeichman Bjorvika library.
The unpleasant thing is that similarly to other scandinavian countries the food is pretty expensive in Oslo. So, if one is travelling on a budget, they might need to spend extra time researching affordable food options.
I personally enjoyed the well-developed system for getting around the city by bike. I didn't use the public transport so much, but the express train from the airport seemed very conveneient and nice.
The city seems very diverse like a patchwork quilt. Some districts are distinguished and posh, others are unerground and artsy. During this trip I stayed near the Akerselva river and cannot say it was my favourite experience. The district seemed to noisy and a bit ditry and I thought all of Oslo was like this until I started discovering other areas.

I'm sure its a nice and liveable city if you're a local, but...
I'm sure its a nice and liveable city if you're a local, but in terms of tourist attractions, it doesn't have a lot compare to other major European cities. BUT it also depends on what you're looking for. I think for more urban/human centric activities (which is what i like) it lacks compare to other cities, but for more nature stuff its def a good choice!

Oslo is an amzing city to visit, to explore and see so much.
Oslo is an amzing city to visit, to explore and see so much. The hotel we stayed in was central, not far from the train station, quite close to the harbour and museums.
I would recommend that you purchase an Oslo pass. We purchased an Oslo pass for three days and we got our moneys worth.
As our hotel provided breakfast, fika(coffee and cake in the afternoon) and dinner we did not eat anywhere, apart from buying some cakes from a baker shop.
As long as you have a good map you should be fine.
As for museums to visit: the Nordic Bible museum, the armed forces and castle, the history museum, the ski jump and so much more.
If you are travellling by plane to Oslo airport, use the express train, only takes about 20 minutes. Oslo is well worth a visit.

Not the cleanest city in the world, but fine.
Not the cleanest city in the world, but fine. People are not talkative and they are rather reserved, but they are trying to be helpful when needed. A lot of beautiful places to go, including parks, other 'nature' centres, restaurants. Great public transportation. People speak great English. Mind that everything is rather expensive. I would most certainly visit again.

Oslo is where you stay to go other places in Norway.
Oslo is where you stay to go other places in Norway. A few sights were closed, the rest were so-so. Lot of people watching in the area of Oslo Central station. Locals get out and enjoy a nice day. Pay the difference and stay near the central station, lot easier to get around, lot to do, most things walkable.
Book the Deluxe Double Room. The location is perfect and very close to everything. The lounge is severely underrated and should be visited by all who stay here. The chef was brought in and is amazing. Small menu, tried everything and it was all 5 star. The rooms can be surprisingly small in this hotel. The Deluxe Double rooms are on the front corner of the hotel and have the most space (see my fire exit picture). It is worth every penny for this space and it has the best view.
Loved it!!! a really perfect small room with super duper competitive price and the flavour and smell of 5 star hotel!! really had nothing less in comparison to a 4-5 star hotel! super clean, super essential and focused on the real things: perfect quality of bed, so nice sleeping quality, so low noice levels, so clean bathroom, cosy decorations, super nice lights perfectly thought to help you relax. people its gives way more that you will expect!
Everything was super clean in the room, and, everyday they changed our towels and renewed the tea box and coffee. (We had a kettle for coffee and tea). There is a safe deposit box that you can hide your stuff. There is an extra electrical heater for colder days. The location is amazing in the middle of everything. The breakfast was a 5 star hotel breakfast you may find everything you need. You can choose whatever you want from the open buffet.
The room was small, but efficient. It's in a great location, but still quiet. I appreciated that there was a fan already in the room, since it was a little warmer than usual. The breakfast was WONDERFUL and I loved having a Nespresso in my room
I was in Oslo twice on my trip to Norway, and the second time I booked another hotel and I wish I had booked Astoria again.
Thon has the BEST staff!
The hotel location is adjacent to the train station and is excellent. This is a short walk to many of the downtown sites and restaurants including the opera. The staff are great and were extremely helpful. The breakfast is one of the better values in Norway with good quality and variety. You can get your fill of smoked salmon here!
Breakfast variety was excellent. Food provided was top quality
Love the tea/coffee and water offered within the hotel common area
staff was helpful in providing information within the area
Location of hotel is close proximity to the city centre
bathroom ammenities w Locitane product is a major plus

Check in reception was great. Our luggage was delivered by Norway in a Nutshell with no problem. Arranged an early taxi to the airport. Ate a late dinner in the restaurant that was delicious! Morning receptionist was also great. Made sure we had something for breakfast since we were leaving before it was open.
Great hotel in the city center - walking distance to all major attractions. Superb breakfasts and dinners - included, tasty and good quality. Crew was very competent and helpful. Standard rooms are not very large but have everything you need. Perfect value for money. I'll be back.
The overall courtesies extended by the Hotel Staff were exceptional. Check-in was quick and the Staff's pleasant welcome was good. My Official events in Norway were in close proximity to the venues and that made it easy for me to attend my activities on time.
City center location, walking distance to all facilities. Amazing and really friendly staff. Locked locker room available for all guests. Breakfast was delicious. If I will ever return to Oslo I will choose this hotel again.
Beautiful updated superior room; fantastic bathroom! Lots of light and mirrors. Excellent staff in every capacity-gracious, pleasant, efficient. Yes, best breakfast in Norway-maybe Earth!
