Western Culture East of the Rockies

Set on plains dominated by the Rockies, Calgary shot to international fame as first Canadian host of the Winter Olympics. The Olympic Park is still used for skiing and summer events, and also houses Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Speed skating and ice hockey matches thrill crowds in the Olympic Oval, whereas NHL games kick off at the Saddledome, an arena on the Calgary Stampede grounds, site of a huge 10-day rodeo and Western festival. The neighbouring river meets the Bow River by Fort Calgary, a former Mountie outpost. The zoo is on one of the river’s islands, while Prince’s Island Park overlooks the downtown skyscrapers.

Calgary Tower offers far-reaching views, and Stephen Avenue at its feet is lined with restaurants and bars. 17 Avenue also offers good nightlife, while the Chinook Centre and Barclay Parade have a host of stores. The Core shopping centre includes Devonian Gardens, reportedly the world’s largest indoor gardens.

Other attractions include Telus Spark science centre, the eclectic Glenbow Museum and Heritage Park, where a paddle steamer and steam train transport you to Calgary of yesteryear.

Calgary Airport is near the city centre, and Booking.com offers luxury hotels with airport shuttles, cheap motels, and B&Bs with parking. If you’re lucky, you might even see the Northern Lights from your accommodation.

I enjoyed Calgary especially the view in Downtown, I really explore an entire day in downtown cause I have a strong penchant for historical buildings, I love the architectural structures everywhere :). Next time I visit Calgary, I would like to explore Canmore and Banff! Though some shops closes so early like Dollarama and Shoppers, but in total, I feel safe walking around even at night, though of course wouldn't want to take some risk, so I didn't stay too late at night outside.

This is a great location to get around the city.

This is a great location to get around the city. However, it was too noisy due to traffic and having a train close by. The hotel rooms were clean. However, the sheets although they looked to have been clean, were stained.

Nicer in the summer months although the skies have been...

Nicer in the summer months although the skies have been smokey the past few years (forest fires). Prince's Island Park is probably the best park in the city located in the downtown area (free parking on Sundays & $1/h on Saturdays). The Peace Bridge (foot bridge just west of the Prince's Park) is a must see due to it's unique construction. Nose Hill Park (largest) has walking trails, but has no trees and rolling hills with grass, nothing to see there. Great Hamburgers, fries and shakes at Peter's (since 1962) on 16th Ave NE with areas to park and eat. Good Shopping at the Core Mall downtown, Chinook Mall along the McLeod trail and South Centre Mall. Downtown is interesting to walk around and photograph. Some people like the old downtown area along 17 Ave SW but I found it to be sketchy. Studio Bell is a nice place for Music History in the downtown area. Banff & Lake Louise are only a couple of hours away west. On the negative side I found driving on the Deerfoot hwy (and Calgary in General) to be challenging as many drivers are on the aggressive side, stay in the slow lane otherwise you'll have someone riding your bumper, etc. Plan you trip out in advance to avoid highway anxiety. Drive Safe and have fun. I'm sure there are many other things I missed seeing such as the Calgary Tower, maybe next time.

Traffic during bad weather always sucks, slow drivers, rush traffic which can make a drive extremely painful especially when going 20 kms on an 80 km road. Drivers are rude, aggressive and they like to tailgate others. Lots of options for restaurants and dining out.

Downtown architecture is great, being from Edmonton I am used to a larger city however the buildings here are interesting to look at and all the public art is a nice touch. There is a ton of construction which makes getting around a pain and the use of off ramps is a bit much, if you miss a turn your going for a scenic drive. Overall it has the typical big city issues in regards to homeless people and drug use but I feel they have a good grip on it, we never felt unsafe walking around with our 4 year old and 3 month old. I definitely recommend checking out Blue Star Dinner we ate here for a few breakfast and weren't disappointed- 809 1 Ave NE, Calgary, AB T2E 0C2 We also ordered from Michael's Pizza Restaurant & Delivery twice while we were down there they had amazing pizza and being a house of Celiac's it was so nice to have a real pizza, we will now be making a detour to get these when driving past Calgary. -139 10 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0L9 Lastly Heaven Restaurant Market had some pretty deadly meals they are a bit more expensive but so worth it! -1013 17 Ave SW #119, Calgary, AB T2T 0A7

My trip began with a very enjoyable performance at Theatre Calgary. I enjoyed the waterfront walkway and the beautiful Princess Island area. Lovely views and lots of great cafes along the path. I enjoyed the outdoor bonfire pits and the ice rink near the Eau Clair area.

This hotel was perfect for between flights. It is located very close to the airport and has a free shuttle to take you there. The restaurant downstairs had lovely food, and it is very handy if you're travelling and don't feel like going far. It is close to a bus stop, where the bus will take you right into the middle of the city if you don't have a car. The staff are super helpful, and the room was huge. The amenities were very modern and the shower had great pressure. I will definitely stay here again if I am in Calgary.

The only hotel in Canada that has delivered an actual disabled shower room. Thank you. Staff were very helpful and thank you Rose in the dining room. Good breakfast and thanks to reception staff for advising me to buy the breakfast ticket on check in. The appetiser I had (Nachos) was enough for 3 people and I couldn't finish it ! The pool area looked lovely. A pity I didn't get chance to try it out. Very easy to drive to the airport after my stay and drop off the rental car.

The staff was extremely welcoming, friendly, and happy to accommodate. This hotel would definitely be my first choice when back to Calgary. I was pleasantly surprised that the gym was not only open but had just about everything you might think of for a full-body workout. The location is very central and is within 10-20min walk from all downtown attractions and stores. Having a fridge, coffee machine, and a digital clock in the room was definitely a bonus.

This hotel provides excellent service. I booked a room here for my parents during their layover in Calgary. I'm very grateful for the help of the hotel employee, Yevhen. He assisted with translating from English to Ukrainian, arranged for a quick transfer from the airport, answered all their questions, and helped them settle into the room. Yevhen demonstrated great responsibility and professionalism in his work. I'm really thankful to him!

    - Hotel is in great central location, walking distance to downtown Calgary and the local main attractions. We didn't need to use any public transport to explore around. - Our room had 2 double beds and plenty of space to move around. It had a balcony overlooking the pool and part of the city which was nice. - We didn't use the swimming pool, but it looked clean and well-maintained. - There were ice and vending machines.
