Nowadays known as the capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation and the port of the ancient Knossos. This stunning gem features rich history, outdoor markets and important archaeological sites.
Just 6 km from the lively Heraklion is the world-renown ruins of the Knossos palace, where according to the Greek mythology Daedalus built a labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.
Home to the 16th-century church of Agia Ekaterini, the cathedral of St. Minas, Venetian Loggia and the Archaeological Museum, this destination is much more than just a cosmopolitan city with vibrant nightlife. Do not forget to wander around the old port or visit the Venetian Walls.
Beach lovers can discover some of the most popular places of Crete like the tourist resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, the golden beach of Amoudara and the fishing village of Agia Pelagia.
The international airport of Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the largest one in the island and the second busiest in Greece. Situated about 4 km from the city centre, it offers seasonal flights to Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich and St. Petersburg. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels in Heraklion.
Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas.
Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire.
For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting.
We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre.
Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.

It's a nice town with a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants etc etc. People were nice. It has a spider-like outlay and you could easily get lost. GPS was not working well. I ended up searching half an hour for my hotel.

Liked the fact there were lots of places to visit in the town. It’s a mix of old and new and full of places to eat. Bus service is good and not expensive but taxis are expensive to visit around the island. People are friendly and most are able to speak some English but be aware all signs are in Greek so when trying to find your way walking it can be a bit confusing if you don’t speak the language. But that’s part of the fun of the holiday.

Seeing the Palace of Knossos and then the Archeology Museum was a highlight! So much history and so interesting. This is where the Minotaur lived and the site of the Labyrinth, as well as the pre-Greek ancient Minoans. On top of this, inside the Venetian walls are a maze of fun streets with shops and restaurants, all walkable. Good food and fun. So very much worth going to Heraklion! Plus an easy peasy airport is very close nearby.

Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures.
Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures. At first, we were a little put off by the mix of architecture and the labyrinthine streets and alleys, but after a while, it all became known and comfortable. The museums are very good: the Archeo. obviously, but the Museum of Cretan History is lovely and has a pleasant terrace to enjoy coffee. The standout museum for us was the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, which is thoughtfully curated and with kind and friendly staff.

I love Heraklion - I have visited many times and will continue doing so. There’s always something I wish I had more time to visit. During the day there’s so many nearby beaches to spend the day or historical sights to visit. There’s always great venues at night, countless clubs and bars and the restaurants are amazing, even just taking a stroll through the streets is fun.
Heraklion Museum, Knossos and a walk to the port is a must for every visitor!
The position is a perfect compromise for visiting the Cnosso palace ( 7 minutes by car) and Agia pelagia beach ( just 30 minutes for an amazing water in a close by town). The room is clean and traditional. The true gem of the hotel is the hospitality. Katerina ( the receptionist) has been an impeccable and outstanding host, she gave us a lot of useful and practice tips to plan our trip(where to go on the beach, where to buy essential stuff, where to eat tipical Creta food). We felt very welcome and spoiled. Highly recommended.
This hotel is a gem. It is not a beach hotel, but is located very convienently for a visit to Heraklion and departure by ferry. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. The breakfast is varied, with regional items to make you feel you are really in Greece, but specifically on the Island of Crete. The room I was assigned surprised me and really went beyond what I was expected. I have stayed in this hotel now for the fourth time and every time it gets better and better.
excellent city location close to the sea and city centre . Not far from the airport and bus stations . nice eating places nearby staff were helpful and polite with perfect English. The room had a lovely view of the sea and mountains with a nice balcony and a fridge and safe . we loved the breakfast ! so much choice to suit everyone. The hotel was clean and comfortable. we enjoyed our stay and actually booked a further night at the end of our holiday .
Location is excellent if you are using the port. Buses to the airport and out to Knossos are near by. Very shirt walk into the centre.
Friendly and helpful reception staff.
Good breakfast which sets you up for the day. We had an early morning ferry and could opt for an early breakfast.
Modern feel to the hotel. Quiet location.
Small pastries were in reception when we arrived.
Out 3rd stay here and it never lets you down. Always the same exceptional welcome and the ambience of the hotel, the furnishings, the aircon just help you to relax as soon as you get through the door. We had a city room this time which was huge with a settee and all was just lovely. Thank you..we will always stay here for a least 1 night when we come to Crete.
Maria and the staff were kind and quick to respond which we really appreciated when we got a little lost looking for the place. The home was extremely clean, spacious and in a very central location which it easy to walk around and experience Crete. We also appreciated that they left us a bottle of juice and snacks upon our arrival.
This boutique hotel is new as of May 2022 and no expense was spared. We stayed in 5 different hotels in during our visit to Greece. Everything from a 2 star to a 5 star hotel. This was by far the most comfortable place to stay. Off the beaten path but close to the port and airport. I would recommend to everyone to stay here
Modern decor. Rooms & bathrooms are as good as a 5 star hotel. Room amenities also as good as a 5 star hotel. Complimentary coffee, wine & water in room. 5 minutes walk to the ferry terminal. About 10 minutes walk to all water side restaurants. And anything you need call Maria- she will take care of it. Awesome place
The personnel was very nice and helpful, answered all our questions, and let us leave the luggage
Well located, super close to the centre
The hotel has a deal with one of the parking lots nearby and you can park your car there for 8 e/ day
Super nice hosts. Room was large and comfortable. Well appointed. Location is right on the church square with easy access to sites, shops and restaurants. Stayed her for twice, on our way in and out of Crete. Walking distance to the port.
We stayed there because our flight was canceled... so location was perfect for us near airport. Our room was clean and quiet. Staff was nice and helpful. We found nice restaurant nearby for dinner.
Charming lady at the reception, very friendly and all shinny and smiling
Good location in comparison to city centre/airport
Free parking at a location nearby but also easy to park around the hotel
- Petros was welcoming and happy to teach us some Greek. He also helped us plan our next days in Crete.
- Room was spacious and modern. It had all the amenities we could have wished for.
Location is right in the centre and near the bus station for us to head to another part of Crete. Standard nice selection at breakfast, large spacious room and great rooftop pool area.
Excellent location, beautiful view from the top.
The rooms and bathroom were comfortable and clean.
The staff was professional and friendly.
