Charles Darwin and Voyage of the HMS Beagle 2010A special talk by the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society in celebration of National Science Week.

2009 marked the bi-centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his ground-breaking book On the Origin of Species that shocked and revolutionized Victorian society.

This lecture focuses on the family influences upon Charles Darwin and Captain Robert Fitzroy, the commander of HMS Beagle, and their participation in the voyage of HMS Beagle 1831-36.

Fitzroy paid for two artists, Augustus Earle and Conrad Martens, to paint the people and places encountered, and these images underpin the series of sensational stories.
