This educational activity is specifically designed for psychiatrists, psychologists and other physicians, clinicians, physicians-in-training, and healthcare professionals (psychiatry nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants) involved and/or interested in the therapeutic management of patients with psychotic and mood disorders. Objectives
After successful completion of this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
  • Review the efficacy and safety of antipsychotic agents in the treatment of schizophrenia
  • Discuss the side effects associated with first and second generation antipsychotics
  • Comment on the role of polypharmacy in schizophrenia
  • Outline a therapeutic strategy to overcome refractory psychosis
  • Discuss diagnostic and treatment strategies for major depression with psychotic features
  • Summarize available and emerging treatment options for dementia with psychotic features
  • Discuss the nonpharmacological options for patients (such as exercise and neuromodulation) with depressive disorders
  • Expand the therapeutic armamentarium for comorbid depression and anxiety
  • Describe the therapeutic strategies available to treat bipolar depression in adults and in children
  • Summarize the effective management of patients who experience mixed episodes
  • Discuss pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and the mechanisms of agents used to treat patients with this disorder
