Orthopedic Trauma: INJURIES BELOW THE BELT 2010

This course will provide the latest techniques and algorithms for the care of multiply injured patients through a combination of didactic lectures and expert panel question, answer and debate sessions.

Traumatic injuries remain the number one cause of death for young adults, ages 18-50. EMTALA legislation was initially passed by Congress as a method to reduce patient dumping on level-1 trauma centers. However, this legislation has had the unwanted defect of making legitimate transfer of multiple injured patients more difficult. As a result, more patients remain at the initial facility for extended periods of time, thus placing the burden of care for these patients on the surgeons practicing at non-trauma institutions. This has created the need for these surgeons, who would not otherwise be required to care for these multiple injured patients, to maintain competencies in providing initial management of the multiple injured patient.
