Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
Just 5 tram stops from JR station, and then a short walk to the hotel
Room was not too small than I thought
There was a long table to put my personal stuff
Sakura Machi bus terminal is just 5 min walk, where buses to Takachiho and many other places are available
Kumamoto castle is a 20 min walk
A big shopping mall and supermarket nearby
Good sound proof as there was a festival parade early in the Sunday morning
Location is right next to Sakura Machi mall and bus terminal. Near Kumamoto castle. Amenities placed at lobby for guests to take. Enjoyed the ice pops and fermented milk drinks outside onsen. The soba served as supper was delicious too. We like how the toilet is separated from the bath.
Breakfast was a great spread featuring both local and continental dishes. Was able to try karashi raikon and Mt Aso milk pudding.
Great location, just a short walk from Kumamoto Castle as well as the tram line that takes you directly to Kumamoto station. Lots of shopping and restaurants also very close by. Room was a bit small even by Japanese standards, but still very clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. 7-11 connected directly to main entrance and protected from the weather - easy access for a snack or drink!
- The room is big and comfortable.
- The receptionists are willing to help.
- Great view to the Kumamoto Castle on the rooftop.
- There is a spacious room near the entrance that you can put all your clothes and luggage, and even a air purifier that you can dry your clothes there.
The location is actually quite convenient. There's a tram stop right at the main street and Sakuramachi Bus Terminal Centre is just less than 5 min walk across the street. There are also a lot of eatery choices around the area. Within walking distance to Kumamoto Castle.
Friendly, helpful reception staff, great location and wonderful views towards the Kumamoto Castle (as per the hotel's name), nice room with comfy bed and many appliances, coin laundry facility, alright for my visit to this interesting town.
The hotel was in a great location, next to the shopping street, and lots of food/restaurant options nearby too. I have an excellent view of the Kumamoto Castle from my room. The breakfast was excellent too!
It was easy to find, and so close to the bus station/ shopping mall called Sakuramachi. The Main Street “Shimo-Tori” was only 5 mins from here, and Kumamoto Castle was also close from this hotel.
Clean and convenient for a solo traveler that wants to visit Kumamoto city. It is close to a lot of places like museums, the castle, and shops. It is also easy to reach by public transportation.
The room was very comfortable, well laid out, quiet and clean. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The location was convenient, easy walk to shopping malls and Kumamoto Castle.
The room was comfortable and well designed. Our room had an excellent city view and Kumamoto castle. Bathrooms were spacious and downstairs patio area was a nice bonus
Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice breakfast buffet on hotel top floor with beautiful view of Kumamoto Castle. Great location, close to Kamotori and Shimotori.
