This multi-coloured and complex African metropolis is the biggest city in South Africa and probably the living example of its much debated history. Johannesburg is not the capital of the country, but it represents its main economic hub, and is also the seat of the Constitutional Court.
Popularly known as Jo’burg, the city is constantly under renovation in all areas, allowing it to slowly but decidedly overcome its ‘Apartheid’ legacy. The Central Business District (CBD) alternates historic buildings with skyscrapers and a lively nightlife. Suburbs like Melville, Newtown or Rosebank have a bohemian atmosphere. With some of the best Johannesburg hotels, Sandton City and Hyde Park are modern residential and shopping areas.
Get to know South Africa’s history at Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum, and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Natural areas like the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Cradle of Humankind’, the Lion Park Nature Reserve, or the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve are located outside the city.
OR Tambo International Airport is the largest airport in Africa, while the smaller Lanseria Airport offers connections to mainly domestic destinations. Hotels near Johannesburg’s airport are a popular choice to avoid the last-minute rush. Check out the wide range of Johannesburg accommodation deals available on Booking.com.

It is bigger than you think it is, it is a country within a country. it is not one thing, it is many. Worlds within worlds. it is a city of work and energy. Your entrepreneurial instincts get stirred just being here. Its people are its selling point, but also again, its people who have chosen the way of crime are at another scale. Do not go into Johannesburg wide-eyed and foolish. It will reward you for that.

I lived in Johannesburg for over 40 years and loved it.
I moved to Cape Town 10 years ago and now only visit Johannesburg on business. Unfortunately, Johannesburg is deteriorating daily as the effects of government mismanagement take their toll. It is as sad as it is relentless.

We travelled through it en route to Safari in Kruger.
We travelled through it en route to Safari in Kruger. It is known to be a little unsafe for tourists, but there are many Ubers about and we never felt unsafe. If you stick to main areas, you'll be fine. Nelson Mandela Square has great options for dining. We visited the Apartheid museum which was really good
This was the best possible start of my stay in South Africa! The Guesthouse is very comfortable, situated in a peaceful garden and located in a safe neighborhood. Also great that they have good gas heating and reliable electricity in the room. But the real gem is the owner, Conway, who was extremely helpful and friendly throughout and gave me so many good tips and insights into life in Johannesburg. I could not have wished for a better start in South Africa.
The best service I ever got in any Hotel or Guesthouse, they're amazing in everything, we're having a great time, they do everything they can to make your stay nice and comfy, we came here cause we had a competition in the area they provided us with everything we needed even some are personal belongings to them but they just let us using it to help us.
Thank you so much for everything. I would recommend this place for anyone who's coming to Johannesburg.
Came to Johannesburg for a quick trip to watch the Australian Rugby Union team play South Africa in Pretoria. Sandton Sun is co-located with the Shopping Mall, next door to Nelson Mandela Square, and connected to Sandton Towers. All staff were very helpful and friendly and in particular the Concierges at each hotel were very helpful. The Wallabies were also staying at the hotel which was a bonus as a big fan!
Das Hotel war super! A new concept that really makes sense! After traveling for 10 days in South Africa I run out of clean clothes. On my arrival I could use their washing machine and dryer. THE HOTEL IS VERY WELL EQUIPPED 👌.
Also the rooms provide you with all the necessities including kitchen and household equipments. The location amazing! Plus Gym, which was essential to me. I felt like home 🏡. Thanks 😊
The clean rooms with excellent A/C, the good location, the polite and helpful staff. Even the breakfast food was nice and plenteous, and I could see that they were trying to get me to enjoy my stay. Overall, I had a fantastic experience during my stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfortable and enjoyable accommodation in the Central Business District of Johannesburg.
The Hotel is central in the Johannesburg CBD and offers good value, comfortable accommodation. The room is spacious enough, the cleanliness can be improved and the open and public spaces/areas and conference facilities could do with improvement and updating. The restaurant on the ground floor is well run and recommended and the venue on the top floor is a definite asset and well worth the visit.
This is the third time in seven weeks we have stayed here and each time the service, the rooms, the meals, and the facilities have consistently been top notch. It is by far our best 'go-to' hotel and resort in Johannesburg. To be recognized and warmly hugged by dining room staff members is a special feeling. This resort is nothing short of having always delivered a wonderful stay for us.
The location in Sandton was perfect to access the shops and restaurants in the area. You can also get the light rail from the airport to the shopping mall, which is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. A very safe area to be in, The staff and the facilities were perfect, but we were only there for two nights - would have liked to have stayed longer
I have stayed in various places around Johannesburg during my South African trips for two last years, and this is my favorite. Amazing location, very chill and safe. Great staff, home feeling, good WiFi, good breakfast - our family stays here for the second time already, and if I’ll visit Johannesburg again, I will stay here again.
The hotel was very good and the chefs were very polite, save you had one waiter in the restaurant who had this typical South African black folks attitude of looking down upon people. If you can fix this all is well. Unfortunately I can't give you more details about her as I do not want you to fire her.
This hotel is everything, we really loved our stay there from the beautiful scents, beautiful scenery from the hotel, exceptional staff, to the choice of luxe furniture.
And to talk about Mr Thomas (one of the best staff there, I recommend him)
Location is great for the Sandton district of Johannesburg, your are directly opposite a large mall with a good selection of food outlets and shops. The Hotels own bar/resteraint Riffs is excellent in quality and value for money.
Exceptional hotel and location north of Johannesburg. Accessible to most tour locations. Great food and wine for a bargain price vs USD. VERY safe and secure. Would absolutely stay here again.
A charming boutique hotel in a safearea of Johannesburg, close to where we needed to go. The decor was a combination of luxe modern and old safari, a perfect intoroduction to South Africa.
