We stayed one night, which was fine. It was a small space, with not much room to spread out. The internet was fast and reliable, though. One thing we really appreciated was that we were able to drop off our backpacks at the front desk before check in time.

The room was spacious and clean. We had a nice view of the river form our room. There were also complimentary tea and heating eye masks in the room and my wife really enjoyed them.
Breakfast was great, it had a sizable selection of fruits.
They also provided us a toiletry kit for our infant daughter, that was a pleasant surprise.
The tram (line A) and several bus lines have stops near the hotel, so going to the main shopping areas or tourist destinations is easy. Plus, the bus to and form the airport stop right in front of the hotel, so its easy for guests without a car.

Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
Okus Hotel was located in a leafy part of the inner city, within walking distance of the castle. Additionally, shopping and restaurants were plentiful and easily found nearby. The hotel staff, conveniently for us, spoke excellent English and provided helpful and willing assistance. Our room was spacious, although not contemporary.
It was close to the bus terminal, there’s a tram station down the road, and staff was kind. The hotel is away from the shopping and bar district, so it’s nice and quiet, although you can easily get there by foot. It’s a straight seven minute walk to Kumamoto Castle, too, with a city park between the castle and the hotel.
Good location between main centre of town and to the Kumamoto castle and also to the train station. We walked to both and also along the river on a pleasant day. We also took a street car and a taxi on some trips. A very tidy modern well designed room that was clean and comfortable for a family of four people.
Exceptional service by staff, clean and contemporary room and public facilities. The hotel is located adjoining the railway station. We took a day trip to Mount Aso by train, so it was very convenient to the station and adjacent shops. Tram close by is convenient for the castle. The large bath is very nice.
Great view of the castle from the room. An easy walk to the castle or to the shopping area. Room was very clean and well equipped. Reception staff were nice, very professional. Liked the free coupons to select a drink downstairs each day. Coin laundry also downstairs near reception, very convenient.
A clean hotel with friendly staff and good restaurants. Also conveniently located for Kumamoto Castle and the tram line. Offers a view of the castle if you are lucky enough to actually get the room you booked.
Friendly staff during breakfast and check-in/ out procedure. Room size typical for Japanese business hotel. Location is great for nightlife and restaurants. It's also only an 8 minute walk to Kumamoto castle.
The hotel was in a great location, next to the shopping street, and lots of food/restaurant options nearby too. I have an excellent view of the Kumamoto Castle from my room. The breakfast was excellent too!
It was easy to find, and so close to the bus station/ shopping mall called Sakuramachi. The Main Street “Shimo-Tori” was only 5 mins from here, and Kumamoto Castle was also close from this hotel.
Good location with less than 10 min walk to the shopping street and able to walk to Kumamoto castle.
Also they have common area for us to relaxing, eating with some accommodations.
As rated above, the room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was good and the view from the dining room window was very nice., We were able to enjoy the view of Kumamoto Castle.
The staff were very accommodating, and staff went above and beyond. The hotel was clean throughout. the view from our hotel room was amazing, had a view of Kumamoto Castle too.
Location. very close to the castle. We walked to the Castle in the morning before the crowds came. Nice view of the Castle from the room. The room is spacious and clean.
Spacious arrangements with enough beds for family of four. Near restaurants and laundromat. Very helpful host. Good location to visit castle. You can drive up and park.
