At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Lovely walkable historical city
Lots of museums and City give free Basil card if you stay there which offers free public transport and discounts helps redress the cost of meals

Basel was much nicer than I had anticipated!
Basel was much nicer than I had anticipated! I usually go to Luzern and Zurich while traveling by train; making them brief stops of two or three days. This time I stopped in Basel and I was delighted with this wonderful city! I can’t wait to return and plan on staying a few more days to take it all in! Wonderful for shopping and dining and easy to get to on the train. Also convenient for visiting surrounding areas, making an ideal home base for longer visits in Switzerland.

We absolutely loved the zoo!
We absolutely loved the zoo! Quite small but the layout was deceptive so that it seemed much larger. The animals appeared well cared for and the enclosures were spacious with attention to enriching the environment for them, while at the same time allowing the visitors to get very close to them. In a very expensive country the entrance fee was very reasonable and half price with the Basel card.
The university botanical garden was also a little gem with a collection of unusual plants beautifully displayed and free to visit.
Basel itself an attractive city with a good feel about it. Don’t miss the quirky fountains near the theatre in the centre of town. Everything is very expensive for a British visitor which applies to Switzerland in general.

Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel...
Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel to other cities nationally and internationally as Basel is sandwhiched between France and Germany so, up to you where your heart will lead you for a day trip towards those countries.
Peaceful and efficient. Trasport good, people chilled.
Be ready to bring some money if you need to stay longer.

Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it.
Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it. The old town is so so nice. It's also very well connected to other places like Reigoldswil for the waterfall or to Augusta Raurica which I recommend.

Lovely city, but very expensive!
Lovely city, but very expensive! Mind you that most kitchens close at 21h and don't accept customers well in advance, as well as lots of places are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Go for all the beauty of the city, but bring the big wallet and plan to eat out early if you don't rent a place with a kichen and cook yourself. Don't bother to stay on a Monday, and consider to leave early on a Sunday, those two days are very, very quiet in Basel!
I have spent 2 nights in the property. The boy on the reception has been polite give me without deposit Switzerland electricity connector for my stay. You have 2 common rooms downstairs and the rest are upstairs , where there is kitchen area, toilets and bathrooms. Next to the property there is a bus stop for number 15 which can bring you to old center, otherwise it is not so close. Railway station is around 1 km from the property but you have more walking to old center. Lockers don't need coins you have a key for them.
Good amenities - an oven, washing machine, dishwasher, and stove. The bathroom was very nice and modern. It has a great shower and the TV was ideal for late night viewing. The check-in process was very smooth. The location was great as it was walking distance from the main areas. I personally wasn't a fan of Basel as there isn't a lot to do to be honest. It is stupidly expensive and I'm sure there's much better cities to visit in Switzerland. I won't be visiting Basel again.
This is a simple, clean, nice hotel metres away from Basel train station, very handy for the airport.
As it's Switzerland, the price reflected that. However, it was exactly what we wanted for one night.
Definitely will stay there again.
The check in situation seems more complicated than it is, but just use the main entrance next to the Starbucks. The receptionists there look after three hotels. They're nice and professional.
Wonderful old hotel in old town Basel, convenient walking distance to many sites. Had a great bar/cafe and two wonderful restaurants. Its right on one of the tram lines, so just walk out your door and you are connected to the clean and efficient swiss public mass transit system. The hotel is a great place to hang out for a day or two as well, and depending on your language skills, there's entertainment that occurs at the hotel.
It is a small and friendly place to be. The staff is lovely. I had a super friendly welcome, and got helpful information for everything I needed. I loved the amenities in the room and the bathroom, and everything is super clean. Considering the prices in Switzerland I found this to be excellent value for money. It will be my place to go when I come back to Basel.
We loved the spaciousness, cleanliness and decoration style of the room. Also, the hotel has a lot of character which we really appreciate. They cleaned the rooms daily. The location was pretty great, right on the edge of the old town. They allowed us to keep our luggage there for a few hours after checkout which was extremely beneficial.
Kai was really helpful and spoke excellent English, and it was easy to communicate with him about my arrival time etc. Everything was very clean and the room had all I needed and was bigger than I expected. Seemed good value for Switzerland! Easy to walk into town and also very close to a tram stop for getting to the train station etc.
It is a good hotel clean comfortable and easy to reach the tram stop train station and the centre of Basel. I recommend it because you can travel all Switzerland and the hotel gave us a ticket for all the days we been there for Basel. The Swiss pass is a good choice to travel all Switzerland. Thanks for having us there!
We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Spalentor. The staff greeted us with smiles and were very helpful in answering questions. The property was clean and the rooms were a good size. Just a short bus or tram ride to the train station or city center. I highly recommend the Hotel Spalentor.
Everything was perfect. It was so clean and the personnel was very nice and helping. They thought about everything! From general things you would need to small gestures :) Also the hotel is close to everything, max 10 minutes to everywhere by tram. Absolutely recommend!
Location was great! Near train station and the Viking boat dock. We rode the public train from the hotel to the cruise dock…quick and easy!! Also near shops and restaurants making it easy to walk around and enjoy. No need for car/Uber/taxi during our stay of 2 days
The hotel is clean, modern, and well located. The personnel were pleasant, and accommodating. Breakfast was delicious, and plentiful. They even made me oatmeal as a special request. The trams pass by regularly, and the old town is all within a block of the hotel.
This is a well-priced (for Switzerland) hotel, about a 20minute walk from Basel old town. It is exactly what you would expect from an Ibis Budget, and the staff were helpful in providing an adaptor (my regular one did not work with the Basel region's sockets).
Wonderful hotel in Basel. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Good size room and bathroom. Smooth check-in and check-out. They provided us with a great free travel card. However, you are right next to the cute old town so you may not need this card.
Great location- walk to: train station, shops, Christmas markets restaurants, grocery, old town sites. Hotel is very comfortable and very clean and very modern.... I guess that's what you pay for.
New, stylish, spacious facilities.
Clean, quiet, with great beds.
Excellent location.
Fantastic value for the money for Basel and /Switzerland overall.
It's a really high house for Switzerland. We were in the eleven floor and the view was amazing. The room has everything you need to stay for a few days.
