Target Audience

This symposium is directed primarily to medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pharmacists, registered nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners interested in new developments for treatment of lung cancer and head & neck cancer. No specific skill or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology is required for successful participation in this activity.  Fellows are also invited to attend.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

This symposium is intended to provide a new paradigm in the treatment options for lung cancer and head & neck cancer.   In addition to chemotherapy and targeted therapy, this symposium will focus on individualized therapy based on emerging agents currently in development and symptom control and management of toxicity issues.  The format will include didactic lectures from known opinion leaders, question and answer sessions, case report presentation and ample opportunity for participant interaction with faculty. In-depth discussion of novel agents at various stages of clinical development for lung cancer and head & neck cancer will be given significant focus. 

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity the participant should be better able to:

  • Select personalized chemotherapy based on histology along with predictive and prognostic markers
  • Utilize personalized maintenance therapy in the lung cancer
  • Identify the personalized and optimized multimodality therapy for localized, advance lung cancer and head & neck cancer
  • Identify and utilize molecular targets and novel agents for head & neck cancers
  • Select and utilize appropriate adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy options in early stage lung cancer
  • Utilize histology in patient selection for integration of bevacizumab in the management of lung cancer
  • Outline the optimal use of EGFR TKI’s, EML4/ALK targeted agents based on biomarkers for lung cancer
  • Identify agents that target immune system in the lung cancer
  • Utilize appropriate symptom control options in the management of targeted therapy
  • Utilize appropriate strategies of using ESAs for chemotherapy induced anemia
  • Discuss practice guidelines and its impact on the cost, coding and reimbursement issues in the management of lung cancer
